Automation is at the basics of any DBA position. Many tasks are repeated, only parameters change, so they have to get automated and industrialized, such as database engine installation and configuration, backups, restore tests, index and statistics maintenance, data archival and purge. Automation can be achieved by collecting metadata of all the databases of the platform, centralize them into a database, and use code to get all these repeatable tasks automated. Logging what each piece of code did process (database, table, index, etc) , when it failed to execute, is important. An exception should not prevent the code to continue to process other objects. Alerts on dashboards are useful in this area.

Automation for backup and recovery can make a lot of difference in the disaster recovery strategy for any environment. If backup automation is in place we are in a better position to safeguard our database in case of a disaster. Along with automation the backup and restore strategy should be thoroughly tested to male sure it works when required.Automation of backups can save lot of human efforts and can avoid human errors as well and hence it's a powerful strategy to protect data from disaster
