Like some of us we didn't go looking for L&D roles, they kind of found us. So it is up to you to invest in yourselves when it comes to developing yourself for a possible promotion. Whether it be taking different courses/certifications, networking, getting a mentor. Your success in this field will rely on the work you put in behind the scenes.

I'm going to respond not just from the perspective of "getting promoted", but primarily from the perspective of staying relevant. If we do the latter, the former will eventually fall in place. All around us are interesting skills sets, and we might be tempted to think that having most of these skills sets guarantees us the promotion. Sadly, that's not the case. We need to start by choosing the most relevant skills that are directly aligned to the role that we are aiming at and that are achievable in a certain amount of time. Well, taking this decision can be time-consuming and tricky. But once we do that, not only the destination becomes clearer, but also the journey becomes easier.

SWOT boosted my career in training: Strengths Consider education, experience, & existing skills. Assess positive attributes that differentiate from others. Weaknesses Reflect on feedback from reviews. Identify gaps in required technical or soft skills. Opportunities Explore training, mentorship, or workshops. Seek diverse projects for skill enhancement. Threats Evaluate industry trends impacting training. Address potential obstacles like limited resources. Action Plan Prioritize quick-win skill development. Utilize internal opportunities. Adjust based on evolving strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, & threats. Continuous Monitoring Adapt the plan in meetings with your manager. Stay informed about industry trends for ongoing relevance.

I wouldn't use the word ''quickly'' but ''when you're ready for it.'' Position yourself for promotion in HR Training and Development by showcasing tangible results in your programs, actively seeking feedback, and demonstrating leadership in projects. Stay updated on industry trends, embrace technology, and build a strong professional network. Take initiative, develop soft skills, and ensure visibility for your achievements by promoting your impactful work within the organization.

Do not bypass internal networking. Know your stakeholders. Help them solve business problems. L&D should have a seat at the table, but you're not going to get there because you know all the learning theories and models. You'll get there because you can help the people who are the backbone of the company be successful.

This is sooo important! You may have created a fantastic module, had the best interactions during a workshop, nailed a social learning event, and yet, nobody knows about your brilliance. Make sure you communicate the outcomes of your work, your tangible added value, and if possible enlist others to share their opinion of your work.

Professional Networking and communicating your value to your organization and other stake holders in the T&D industry, will go a long way in achieving your long-term career growth. It includes establishing connections, contributing in various forms such as writing blogs, joining and contributing in various groups of your interests aligned with your long-term career goals.

Being self-driven is a key requirement for having a progressive career in T&D. Rarely an opportunity will present itself and the onus is on the individual to make the most of any opening and have confidence to deliver and showcase what you can do.

Truth bomb right here... ???? No one will advocate for you or fly your flag higher than you can. Being proactive means you need to step it up, forge that path you aspire to, and get on people's radars. ?? Yes! Easier said than done. Especially those who have spent most of their career flying under the radar, or afraid to self promote because it's not safe to do so (let go of shame!), or it is frowned upon (consider where to direct your value proposition). It's natural to second guess yourself. So, my advice is to surround yourself with a good supportive network and have courage to voice your career aspirations.

If there are plenty of talents, you need to show up and pro actively promoting yourself to attract your superior and colleagues as a potential candidate to get new assignment or promotion. A systematic approach should be prepared, such as to have more engagement with your superior and colleagues. Set a regular agreed schedule to have one on one discussion and share your creative work; discussed what you have accomplished and what contributions you made. Dare to take new assignment even by offering yourself prior to your superior offering to the floors. Hence, you need to be honest with your capabilities to avoid judgment that you are just as ambitious person. Considered ethical and moral judgments when you ‘compete’ with other candidates.
