In a behavioral interview, employers seek examples of your past behavior to predict your future performance. Use the STAR method. Example: If asked about teamwork skills: Situation: During a tight project deadline. Task: Collaborating with a diverse team. Action: Facilitated effective communication, delegated tasks based on team strengths, and encouraged input from all members. Result: Project completed ahead of schedule with high quality, team morale improved. This structure ensures your responses are specific, focused, and highlight your abilities effectively.

STAR is just a story telling method, it's not difficult. In fact most people do it naturally. Think about it as a structure of a book: you start with the intro, then you go on about the problem, what do you do to solve it and the conclusion. And this, my friend, is how you nail a response to behavioural questions (tell me about a time when...)

STAR method is one of the most common used during the interviews. Explain all the SITUATION details: when was it, where, in which company, what was your role. Be very clear and specific to help interviewer understand complexity and challenge. Focus on TASK which was necessary to take and your ACTIONS. Don't speak about all the team work, focus on your individual contribution and then show how you helped the team. Own your success. When explaining RESULT use some data to visualise how big your accomplishment was and what did it bring to your organisation. Don't be stressed by follow up questions, if you are asked those - it might mean that someone wants more details, not that your answer was wrong.

Choosing relevant examples is a key to nail your interview. Focus on the similar roles and industries as the role you applied for. Examples from your studies or internship might be not exactly relevant when applying for the more senior role. Choose wisely and prepare some examples before the interview - it will lower your stress level and give you feeling of control.

To build on this, it's also useful to tailor your examples to reflect the company's values and culture, which can be gleaned from their mission statement and social media presence. Demonstrating how your actions align with these values can be a strong indicator of your cultural fit. Additionally, varying your examples across different roles and projects can showcase your versatility and ability to adapt to diverse situations, further aligning with the employer's needs.

In my experience, examples should be chosen, or considered based on a few of the parameters - The organization we're applying for, the Job description and the responsibilities tagged for the job, and our current/past experiences. In some cases, we might not have real-time experience working on a given situation. In such cases, I prefer to state that I haven't gone through or come across such a situation earlier, however, if I were there in the situation, I would be handling it in this way.

In addition to quantifying achievements, incorporating feedback or recognition received can further validate your claims. For instance, mention if your strategy led to positive customer reviews or if your project received accolades from management. This provides tangible proof of your impact. Also, explaining the thought process behind your actions helps interviewers understand your decision-making style and analytical skills, enhancing the depth of your response.

Use outcomes rather than outputs, which adds more authenticity to the examples and references we provided. This helps to showcase our experience in real-time and helps to showcase our credibility to the interviewer.

An effective strategy is to also reflect on the wider impact of your actions. For instance, discuss how your efforts not only achieved immediate goals but also set the stage for long-term improvements or innovation. Highlighting how you anticipated and navigated potential challenges showcases your proactive and strategic thinking. This approach not only demonstrates your direct contributions but also your understanding of broader business implications, adding depth to your narrative.

The actions and results we share should be realistic, and we should be able to justify them if required. And one thing to be prepared is for any of the follow-up questions from the interviewer. For example, if we worked on a team engagement, we might want to mention the team, precisely what action we took individually, and what results were achieved.

I recommend recording your practice sessions. This allows you to observe your body language and tone, key aspects that convey confidence and clarity. Also, consider varying your practice scenarios to include challenging questions. This helps build agility in responding to unexpected queries. Reflecting on real-life experiences regularly, even outside of interview prep, keeps your examples fresh and relevant, enhancing authenticity in your responses.
