How can you prove to your boss that you're ready for a promotion?

I believe starting with S.M.A.R.T. goals is a great first step but I've experienced people getting caught up in the process rather than the execution. Establishing a S.M.A.R.T. goal isn't about just answering those five questions but it's having the conversation with yourself about what that future success will look like to you, your coworkers, and your boss. How does accomplishing this new goal you set for yourself contribute to or change how other people see you? To me this is where the real effort comes into play. A common trap is focusing on the accomplishment rather than on how the accomplishment of that goal adds to the success of the group, team, department, or division, depending on where you sit.

Demonstrate consistent high performance, take on additional responsibilities, showcase leadership skills, actively seek feedback and implement improvements, contribute innovative ideas, display a strong work ethic, pursue professional development, build positive relationships with colleagues, and communicate your career goals and commitment to the company's success.

One way to demonstrate readiness for a promotion is by leading high-impact projects, showcasing problem-solving skills, and taking on additional responsibilities. Additionally, seeking regular feedback, showing a strong commitment to company goals, and contributing to a positive work environment can highlight your readiness to advance. Building strong relationships with colleagues and actively seeking professional development opportunities are also essential to demonstrate to your boss that you are prepared to take on a role of greater responsibility.

It's crucial to not only reflect on past achievements but also consider how those experiences will inform and shape future actions. It can be called "feed-forward" if you'd like. This can demonstrate a proactive and forward-thinking approach, which is valuable in any professional setting.

Specific feedback is a gift. We can process someone else's perspective and make what we do a little better and that process is never-ending. But we're not all skilled at giving and / or receiving feedback. Here is one way we can create a better experience for both sides: Let's say we're preparing an important presentation and we're practicing in front of colleagues. In the areas where we feel weakest, ask about how that particular point came across to them. Share the takeaway you hope they got and ask how that came across. This allows your counterpart to frame their response which makes it easier for them to share their experience and helps you make changes to make sure you're hitting your mark.

Showcasing your achievements is one aspect that I find people struggling with promoting and you see a lot of that mentioned here. It can be helpful to look at it from a different perspective. Consider the story it tells about who you are as a team member, coworker, etc. We're hired to do a job and the things we're capturing on the list of our accomplishments are likely things we believe our job is. But capturing these things doesn't just give you a list of what you've done, it also paints a picture of who you've helped, who you have supported, and who has reached out to you because of your expertise. This can be an easier story to tell when it's time to share.

It can be challenging to quantify achievements when working on the back office side. In such cases, employees need to come up with a system that allows for a non-metrical transition to numbers. One way to do this is by calculating the time spent on a task before and after implementing improvements. By doing so, employees can determine how much time they have saved for the company in numerical terms. This approach can help demonstrate the value of their work and contributions to the organisation.

Taking initiative is a great way to show that you are highly engaged in your work. In fact, many modern management theories consider employee engagement to be a crucial metric for success. A good leader will always prioritize highly engaged employees over those who are not engaged or have low engagement levels. It's important to stay motivated and take ownership of your work to achieve success in your career.

There are two sides to taking the initiative. First, if we're after a promotion or increased responsibilities, we have to communicate that first. It has to be a known goal so that our taking initiative supports taking on more responsibility and / or a promotion. Second, is the actual effort. Otherwise, our actions and efforts are missing context. It's the WHY we're doing something that contributes to the conversation about a promotion. So how do we do it? It's all about being available, accessible, and contributing without the expectation of anything in return. This is engagement pure and simple. We need to demonstrate we can do the next job before we can be considered for it. What's left is deciding what to act upon to show it.

Take Initiative: Proactively identify areas for improvement or new opportunities within your current role. Volunteer for additional responsibilities and projects, showcasing your willingness to go above and beyond.

Build a Strong Professional Network: Cultivate relationships with colleagues, superiors, and other professionals in your industry. Networking can provide you with valuable insights and support, and it may also help you gain visibility within the organization.

There is a saying that “closed mouths don't get fed”. It simply means you don't get ahead by staying silent and hoping for the best outcome. You have to ask for what you want. Of course, in some cases, it happens without people even asking or trying but in reality, in most situations, people who get ahead in a timely fashion, go after what they want with vigor and they are vocal and purposed about it. Once you have covered all of the previously mentioned bases and you have put in the work, shown initiative, and clearly mapped out your future goals, set the wheels in motion and ask for your promotion and be firm and positive with your approach.

You don’t necessarily have to prove it to your boss. Start by taking full ownership of your work, you must require no supervision. Take up some of your manager’s work to showcase your readiness for promotion. Market your work - don’t shy away from bragging about your top initiatives. Spend time and craft your emails well, especially the ones to (or copied to) senior leadership. Lastly, be visible, through your conversations and the work you do. The promotion will come.

I really struggle with Imposter Syndrome so my line manager came up with a great idea to help me put my value across - without me having to sing my own praises. Essentially I was tasked to come up with 5 well-rounded and thought-out reasons to NOT get my promotion! It sounds counter-intuitive but this showed very clearly, how it was my self-limiting beliefs that were holding me back - not my abilities.
