1 Know your audience

For example, government agencies may prioritize national security, public welfare, or scientific advancement, while private companies may focus on innovation, profitability, or marketability. You need to tailor your proposal and presentation to match the funder's vision and mission, and highlight how your research aligns with them.

One should do outstanding research to show the audience -- the funders before you apply. To slow the pace of climate change, we don’t just need to stop emitting carbon into the atmosphere as quickly as possible. We also need to draw out the excess that’s been accumulating since the start of the Industrial Revolution, pushing the concentration of atmospheric carbon to a 3-million-year high. Seawater is like a potent carbon sponge, able to hold vastly higher concentrations of carbon than the atmosphere. Our oceans exist in equilibrium with our skies: the more carbon in the air, the more the oceans absorb. By that logic, if we can pull carbon out of seawater, we can increase seawater’s capacity to pull carbon out of the atmosphere.

Explaining your problem should in this case not just mean abstract mathematical problem, but also business/engineering problem. Which business problem does this improvement solve better? How much? What are the constraints? How many problems does it solve? What are the existing solutions? How much cost can be saved by better/faster calculations? Next, let the potential founders talk and try to listen. Can they think of other application areas? Are their ideas valid? You also want to understand if they understand the possible impact and if they can bridge the gap between research result and a value adding product for customers.

3 Showcase your solution

The third step is to present your algorithm or solution in a way that is understandable, attractive, and convincing. You need to explain how your algorithm works, what its advantages and limitations are, and how it compares to other algorithms or solutions. You also need to provide some evidence or results that support your claims, such as experiments, simulations, or proofs. You need to use visual aids, such as graphs, charts, diagrams, or animations, to illustrate your algorithm or solution and make it easier to follow and remember.

First of all consider which role you want to have in this. Do you want to license your algorithm and that's it? Do you want to be part of the startup and actually implement the algorithm and other parts of the system? Why not found yourself with a partner? A founder will not be able to pay for several years - if ever. They can't just fund your research because you believe you will soon find a solution. Research funding and cooperations with major companies can provide this. Evaluate carefully how much the algorithm is really worth after considering all the costs and efforts needed to make it into a product that actually sells.You might be underwhelmed. Lastly, consider how you can protect your algorithm from being copied and used by others.
