How can you promote teamwork in a diverse work environment?

Marcus Buckingham has a powerful exercise in his Love + Work series with the Harvard Business Review where he encourages teams to set aside 10 minutes at the beginning of each team meeting to have one team member share answers to a specific set of questions that showcases their strengths, working preferences, and stories of success. This exercise allows team members to share the pieces of their stories and diversity that they want to highlight within their team.

In my experience, everything fails when a company picks one favorite and has an invisible policy of doing everything to keep that one carrot in place. In order for things to work, everyone has to have their moment in the sun. If it’s not like this, someone will be slighted and the whole mission of inclusiveness fails. If it can’t be done evenly, with everyone over a set number of weeks, it shouldn’t be done at all. It’s just too many holes for favoritism.

Something that we need to understand about diversity is that, apart from differences in demographics and values, we should also take into consideration differences in work styles, experiences, communication preferences etc.. By recognising this, we are able to create an environment where we are more sensitive of each other’s needs and more empathetic with one another. This likewise impacts our perspectives and manners of interaction thus promoting better camaraderie, collaboration and communication across teams.

3 layers of diversity exist: - Surface-level: this refers to the immediately observable differences between people, such as age, race, and gender. These characteristics are discernible at first glance. - Medium-level: this encompasses aspects that are not immediately visible but can be discerned after some interaction, like educational background, location, income or job function. - Deep-level: this relates to values, beliefs, and personality—elements that are not visible and might not be discerned even after some interaction but require a deeper assessment. Our attention gravitates towards surface-level because it's immediately accessible, but it's the deep-level diversity that has the most profound impact on team performance.

Effective communication is important in any team. When mismanaged, it can lead to confusion or even conflicts. One common pitfall is the use of various communication tools, from WhatsApp to emails and calls, for sharing critical information. Such practices can result in misunderstandings, e.g. verbal communications might be forgotten or misconstrued. To prevent this, teams should establish a primary, formal communication platform that centralizes information. The chosen tool should facilitate documentation and provide real-time updates on tasks. For instance, my team utilizes Azure DevOps. It offers a Wiki for documentation and Boards for monitoring work items, ensuring clarity and accountability throughout our processes.

In order to lead a diverse team of individuals, one needs to understand and be able assess the various personalities and cultures within the team. The understanding and knowledge you gain will make you a very strong leader because you will learn how to effectively train, respond and earn each member of the team's respect. Be a leader not a boss. Your leadership skills will be different with each member of your team. Everyone learns, a new position, at a different pace, it is your responsibility to train them accordingly. Their failure is your failure; turnover costs the company thousands of dollars.
