How can you promote student engagement in literacy and reading?

Reading enhances imagination and creativity, one must focus on ensuring that ample opportunities are provided. It is important that the habit of reading is ingrained in children at an early ages, starting with pictures books and then to proper reading and moving into literary works. We do focus a lot on academic reading, however increased focus should be on personal reading, for joy. Conducting a range of activities should be a part of the reading environment.

I agree positive environment and approach will do better , to make them understand the value of education and counsel them accordingly

During my first year as a principal of a charter school, we had the highest gains on the state standardized test scores for English Language Arts. The first thing you do is: You make the reading relevant. Most kids growing up in an urban environment are not concerned about reading passages of milking cows in Sweden. Have them read about things that they’re interested in. That is half the battle. The second thing you do is: Make the reading of the appropriate challenge. If the text is too difficult for a child to understand, they will QUIT, so give children a lot of practice on a level that they can understand. The more they practice, the more they will strengthen their reading muscles and be able to gradually build comprehension.

Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body. So to promote well being in totality, we need to have ample thrust on inculcating reading habits amongst children right from the pre k level. The trick is not to make reading sound like a chore, like a part of the curriculum that has to be finished. Make reading joyful. Encourage discussions, let children doodle and read, allow them to read different genres, incentivize reading at home and school. Model reading habits during parent orientation. Make it clear to the parents that you are expecting the child to read at home as well. Have book tasting sessions! An exciting introduction to the habit of reading.

When creating a course, consider backward design. What themes or ideas would you like to explore with your students? Then consider the diverse perspectives and experiences that surround those themes and ideas. It is your job to teach students HOW to think, not WHAT to think. Choose widely from quality texts in these indices: age, gender, race/ethnicity, nationality, orientation, faith-system, period, political persuasion, etc. Also consider the medium: film, long-form text, short-form text, digital media, speeches and songs, as well as art, like paintings, photographs, or sculptures. Students can learn to "read" mediums, considering time and place, as well as the rhetorical aims best situated within the Aristotelean (Rhetorical) Triangle.

I have always been a strong supporter of book reading clubs and societies. However, this has been getting reduced day by day due to the culture of reading online and lack of focus/ distractions in the teenagers. Span of attentions being shorter it is a tough job. To promote this culture I use two modes 1. Group talks on any pointer that I adapt from a book 2. Book reviews on a regular basis and post them in the stories and connect by adding opinions.

What I found is take the children in the library and leave them. Observe them browsing g the books. Repeat it for a few days and analyse what sort of texts invite them. Make their choice available without asking any question. Share something g from any book randomly and see how he/she has read come up eagerly to share reading.

Students understand the meaning of texts when they have a personal perspective of the text, whilst acknowledging the message of the author. Teachers create "space" when they write a statement. This channels the student discussion in groups, pairs and individually. Students thus begin to make informed responses based on their perceptions. These discussions develop their oracy skills. They link the texts to their experiences- text world- and make connections when appropriate. If they can "think it, they'll say it and write it." This independence also ensures the teacher's role as " gate-keeper" is limited. Misconceptions are identified, discussed and addressed.

Lead by example! What children see, they follow. So show how you live and if they know you care for them, they will follow your lead.

Before introducing new topics or content, find literature that can be given a modern twist, taking old stories and making them new. This approach helps students see their emotions or situations reflected in the characters of their reading materials. By engaging students with this approach beforehand, teachers can stimulate curiosity about what they will be learning. Encourage students to generate questions based on the new twist of the story, fostering a sense of inquiry and anticipation in the classroom.

Making connections is the best strategy to increase literacy snd reading skills amongst students of all groups. It will keep their interest and curiosity alive and they won't feel bored. Another best way is project method. It helps them increase their research skills as well.

Reading can be even more valuable when effective strategies are employed. Setting specific goals during reading time can help students stay focused and maximize the learning experiences. Breaking down reading into task-based segments allows students to better comprehend and retain information while fostering an enjoyable learning experience.

If there is one bit of advice I can give from my years as a literacy educator it is that teachers and other educators have a responsibility to help students find things they love to read, encourage them, and give them time for reading. Reading is a skill, and like other skills, it requires practice. How do you practice? You read. What makes you want to read? The material that is at the right level, not too easy or too difficult, and is interesting to you. If you can turn kids into readers who love reading and read regularly, they will grow in reading skill. I have seen many masterful teachers and librarians who help students become readers. An excellent teacher knows just which book to give which student and at which time.

With my back on an education, I think this is one of my favorite things to allow in the classroom. If students feel a connection to what they are doing, then they are more susceptible to learn. Having students being able to choose what they read or how they are doing it engages students more and is more productive than just telling them or forcing them to do what you want.

In my experience, involving students in their own goal-setting and growth assessment fosters student motivation and a sense of ownership of their individual learning path.

Ou seja o conhecimento é compartilhado.

Creo firmemente en fomentar la participación del alumnado en el aula y las actividades colaborativas, compartir experiencias de lectura y recomendar (o no) algún libro o actividad no solo motiva al alumno sino que abre la puerta a ampliar el banco de actividades o propuestas de cada uno. La gestión por grupos de la biblioteca de aula, en donde, además de la gestión, puedan hacer recomendaciones a sus compa?eros o al docente para nuevas adquisiciones puede resultar muy interesante.

It was my experience that one effective way to get learners to understand the value of literacy was to align it with ideas of 'power'. I never talked very much about the rights and wrongs of apostrophes or spelling or reading etc; instead, I preferred to talk about the effect that an individual's performance of their literacy had on others: i.e. it made other people listen; it made other people take the information seriously; it made people sit up and shut-up; it confounded expectations; it disrupted existing prejudices. I always pushed my learners around their reading and literacy because I wanted them to be powerful. I think sometimes 'reading and writing' are experienced by learners as ends in themselves, abstracted from their effect.
