Through proper training of members of staff thereby leading to eventual delegation of duties. The training ensures that all expectations are communicated effectively and employees thereby know what is expected of them.

Almost everything is like poetry in management, unless it is taken seriously. By poetry, it means, nice words, inspiring quotes, playing Mr. Nice/Ms. Nice, but when it comes to application of those nice things, very few people of power, apply them. As for as the topic in hand, "promoting autonomy and empowerment at workplace", is concerned, it is only possible, if the line hierarchy actually trusts line managers, down the line. No micromanagement, no undue criticism, no looking-down upon functional managers, even at lower middle management level. Trust your managers, trust your employees (of course until they prove themselves to be unworthy of that trust). This will create empowerment, that will in turn, create excellent results.

In my mind there are some ideas: Clear Communication, Provide Opportunities for Skill Development, Delegate Responsibility, Encourage Decision-Making, Recognize and Reward Achievements, Flexible Work Environment, Create a Positive and Inclusive Culture.

I disagree with setting goals and expectations for your employees. I think this should be done by the employees themselves. The role of the employer is to set the overall goals and direction of the company or team, then employees should be given as much autonomy as possible or to decide how they will contribute to that (perhaps with guidance or mentoring from their leader). Goals and expectations set by employers are seldom effective. Compare this with goals set by employees that they are interested in, committed to, fired up by and coming up with their own ideas about how to pursue them.

Empowering your team starts with crystal-clear expectations. Outline specific outcomes, work scope, deadlines, quality benchmarks, and available resources. This roadmap not only gives direction but also instills purpose. It's about trusting your team to find their unique path to the goals, steering clear of micromanagement. This approach fosters autonomy, fuels creativity, and propels a culture of ownership and responsibility. As a leader, it's not just about dictating the 'what' – it's empowering your team to figure out the 'how' in their way.

As part of empowering employees and giving them more autonomy, I think it’s also good to have employees decide the rules of engagement around feedback. Do they want it? What sort of feedback do they want? How do they want it given to them. The more employees can decide these things the more they will own the feedback and feel empowered by it, rather than being something that is imposed on them that everyone has different (and sometimes very uncomfortable) reactions to.

I find teams work far better the more autonomy people have and the more empowered they feel. Micromanagement and unnecessary approval processes kill teams. When people are empowered to make decisions themselves they work better with others because they’re not afraid to step up and take responsibility for getting to an outcome together. You get the person’s whole self and not half of it because they have to seek approval for things. Empowerment feeds collaboration. People can make their own judgments on things, build trust with others and enjoy creating an outcome together.

Balance efficient execution with creative development.

As a leader looking to empower your people, ask yourself these key questions: Have I clearly articulated the goals and limitation for delegated decisions? Am I willing to let go of control and withstand short-term mistakes? T Have I selected employees with the skills and judgment to take on more responsibility? Have I built a culture of trust where employees feel safe taking risks? Are employees ready for the accountability that comes with authority? Will employees have access to the resources and support needed to excel? How will employees learn and grow from this delegated authority? These questions shall help leaders in delegating with wisdom and responsibility to unlock ingenuity, and performance in their teams.

When one is assigned into a role or certain function, with time their work becomes routine, uninteresting and ultimately monotonous and consequently the employee seizes to be productive. It is therefore always good to assign more reaponsibility and delegate more challenging tasks to employees to keep them challenged, motivated and ultimately happy in the organisation. However wise leaders are always on the lookout against overdelegating and subsequently overwhelming their team members.

Large organizations can be bureaucratic quagmires, where going beyond the explicit role definitions can attract attention, positive and negative. If the leaders empower team members to go beyond the formal delegations and own the grey zone, it can not only lead to superior performance but also improved motivation.

One thing I found helpful before is coaching and mentoring alongside a training secondment. Being seconded into a promotional position alongside mentoring and coaching, enables the employee to learn the role and skills for the role and supports the succession plan.

A lot of managers talk about developing employees but don't follow through. Why? Some just want to extract the most value from people's current skills rather than help them gain new ones. They take the quick win over long-term vision. Others see capable employees as threats, worrying that if their teams become too skilled, they'll become less needed. Great leaders uplift and empower people. But that takes patience and sacrificing short-term gains. It requires believing in human potential over ego. True leadership is about doing what's best for the team's growth, not what makes the leader look best. That's the mentality required to really invest in developing employees. I think allowing your employees to fail goes hand in hand with autonomy and empowerment. Probably one of the reasons leaders struggle with it so much is because they don’t want things to go wrong. But how many times did we make mistakes on our way to becoming a leader? If we want empowered team members we need to be okay with them making wrong decisions, going down wrong paths and making mistakes. It’s all part of their learning and good for them. A leader’s role is to create a safe space for this to happen and for people to learn and grow from it. A team of empowered people who fail sometimes is much better than a team of micromanaged people who are scared to stretch themselves, come up with new ideas and try new things.

A psychological safety net is very important for autonomy and empowerment to be sustainable. In the absence of this, failures can be a catalyst for micromanagement. "If its the first time it is not a mistake" can be a very powerful way to set the culture and safety net for team members to thrive in and go beyond the routine, even if that results in some failures.
