El período de repago de la inversión es una fácil simple y rápida, muy utilizada, para comprender cuanto demoraría en pagarse dicha inversión, con los ahorros o beneficios que genera. De cualquier manera, es una evaluación simplificada e incompleta que no tiene en cuenta el Ciclo de vida de dicha inversión.

Sin embargo, cuando se cuantifica en forma simplificada y anual, pierde la visión de Ciclo de vida, ya que no tiene en cuenta la vida útil que tendrá la inversión en la Planta. Otra alternativa más completa con visión de Ciclo de Vida, es útilizar el VAN: el Valor actual Neto, que cuantifica el beneficio en toda la vida en servicio.

3 How to calculate payback period and ROI?

To calculate the payback period and ROI of an energy efficiency measure, you need to know three things: the initial cost, the annual savings, and the lifespan of the measure. No es correcto lo que indica este apartado del artículo, no necesariamente el ahorro anual de una medida de Eficiencia Energética, es la diferencia entre las factura de energía antes y después de la implementación. La Factura de Energía engloba a gran cantidad de procesos y equipos consumidores de Energía en una Planta Industrial, por tanto, no se puede simplificar, que toda una eventual variación, sea adjudicable al ahorro de la medida implementada. De hecho, el Protocolo de Medida y Verificación de EVO, el IPMVP fue concebido para brindar un marco para poder cuantificar de forma adecuada el ahorro real de una medida de Eficiencia Energética. De forma análoga al IPMVP, la Norma ISO 50015, también brinda un marco para determinar el ahorro.
