1 Causes of attenuation

Attenuation can occur in fiber optic cables due to various factors that affect the propagation of light signals. Absorption, scattering, bending, splicing, and dispersion are some of the common causes of signal power loss. Absorption is the conversion of light energy into heat by the molecules of the fiber material or impurities. Scattering is the deflection of signal power due to the interaction of light waves with microscopic variations in the fiber density or refractive index. Bending is the deviation of light rays from the core of the fiber when it is curved or twisted. Splicing is the imperfect joining of two fiber segments or connectors. Dispersion is the distortion of signal quality due to the spreading of light pulses over time as they travel through the fiber with different speeds and wavelengths.

Even if all of the above can be the cause of attenuation in fiber optics cables, the main reason why light gets attenuated and in some cases reflected back, is poor quality of connector I élection and cleaning. All fiber networks include multiple connections and the #1 cause of network failures is connectors being damaged or dirty. Make sure to inspect and clean when required!

Attenuation is simply the loss of a good signal strength at the receiver end, where the signal becomes useless or unable to be recover by the optical receiver. The intelligence carried within the optical transmission signal has degraded to such a degree that receiver is unable to fetch/recover the data, voice or video serial transmissions, where the ones and zeros, have become so corrupted that all protocol detection capabilities by the receiver is now lost. Now the reason for this optical signal failure as you know, can be many. The reason for failure or degradation at the receiver end is for a qualified technician to test with the proper optical test equipment. The analyzation of the optical signal test results will provide for the fix

Assuming that the correct fiber fiber has been selected, the three controllable causes boil down to craft practice: properly made splices, properly applied connectors, and physical compliance to bend radius.

2 Types of attenuation

Attenuation can be classified into two main types based on the wavelength dependence of the signal loss. Linear attenuation is the signal loss that is proportional to the length of the fiber and independent of the wavelength of the light. This type of attenuation is mainly caused by absorption and splicing. Nonlinear attenuation, on the other hand, is the signal loss that varies with the wavelength and power of the light, and it is mainly caused by scattering and dispersion.

The different types of attenuation are automatic, deliberate, environmental; however, we have other criteria about types of attenuation such as linear and non-linear attenuation.

3 Measurement of attenuation

Attenuation is measured in decibels (dB), which is a logarithmic unit that expresses the ratio of input power to output power. The attenuation coefficient (alpha) is the rate of signal loss per unit length of the fiber, and it is also expressed in dB/km. The total attenuation (A) of a fiber segment with length (L) and attenuation coefficient (alpha) can be calculated as: A = alpha * L The lower the attenuation coefficient, the better the quality of the fiber. The attenuation coefficient depends on the fiber material, structure, and wavelength of the light. Typically, optical fibers have lower attenuation coefficients at longer wavelengths, such as 1550 nm, than at shorter wavelengths, such as 850 nm.

Attenuation can be prevented or minimized by utilizing a variety of techniques and devices that improve the quality and efficiency of optical communication systems. Common methods include selecting high-quality, low-loss fiber optic cables with low attenuation coefficients and high bandwidths; using appropriate light sources and detectors that match the wavelength and power of the fiber optic cables; avoiding excessive bending, twisting, or stretching of the fiber optic cables during installation and maintenance; employing proper splicing and connector techniques that ensure low insertion loss and high return loss; utilizing optical amplifiers to boost the signal power at regular intervals along the fiber optic cables; and employing dispersion compensation modules to correct the distortion of light pulses due to chromatic or polarization mode dispersion.
