I agree that you cannot stop the decline without first identifying the stage of a relationship. However, identifying the stage can be difficult as it would require a critical and honest analysis of two perspectives (client and salesperson). My advice would be to have a face-to-face conversation with the client with open ended questions to determine alignment of goals as this will ensure expectations on both sides are clear.

You have to be transparent and have each party’s interests at heart. Can’t be one sided. Everyone has goals they will like to achieve.

In the beginning stage of a relationship, you'll focus on establishing trust. A key indicator that you've been successful in this stage is once your scope of influence within the customer's organization increases through them introducing you to additional stakeholders. You'll want to also look for engagement trends from the key stakeholders and decision-makers. If their responsiveness/engagement declines, you may need to reconsider your approach and ask yourself if you need to add more value during your engagements. Once you've established trust, the core focus is continuously adding value.

Communication in my view is a soul to your relationship. Don't just communicate well but learn the art of effective and positive Communication. It turns productive for sure however significant changes draw new attention among groups.

Creating effective monologues is important. Developing partnership or joint program goals is another. Compare and connect your strategic plan with theirs.

Find your best way of communicating- and stick to it. Everyone has different ways of expressing themselves that should be accounted for. In my experience, not talking daily, at the minimum, has resulted in broken relationships.

Contribute ideas to help solve problems. Being part of the closes together helps to drive innovation. In my experience, two-way dialogue has helped to either clarify existing ideas or create new ones. Try it out - and have fun!

Nurture is a good description when it comes to business relationships. Within a business organisation stakeholders can be added, withdrawn or leave that business. Adding new stakeholders brings potential change if not aligned so continually nurturing the relationship allows for greater integration so that changes do not become a shock or risk.
