Equally important is doing an audit on existing sites for duplicate content or cannibalization. Exporting the pages of your site into Excel with meta data helps give a quick clear overview of what you have. Keeping a well organized list of your site structure & keyword URL mapping will eliminate this being a future issue.

Content should always be based around key topics/key words directly stemming from the organizational needs, goals and objectives. Anything falling outside of this should be flagged immediately.
