When I was first learning about electronics. ESD will kill components, reverse polarity, mess with ohms, and kill chips. This can happen from computer repairs. Cleaning of dust can even produce these charges. Or just spinning a fan with your finger essentially creating a generator causing even more possible ESD. To prevent such things is as easy to getting a ESD strap. If you do not have one you need to ground yourself and the device/devices. You need to create a ground you will be a lot safer. But ESD is never going to go away.

Materials that are conductive or dissipative like metals, conductive plastics, or fabrics- also consider shielded jigs or tools you or your workplace provide that contain additives that pass ESD certification. Avoid using materials that are insulators like paper, plastic or paper bags or rubber. It's covered later on in the article, but grounding yourself with a properly calibrated wrist strap or using an ESD certified desk or surface is leaps and bounds better than placing on a regular table or on top of the ESD bag it may have came in.
