DOS as it sounds is malicious intended traffic which results in depletion of resources and eventually denial of legitimate applications or services because of exhausted resources like memory allocation unavailability etc. Few tips: 1- Restrict inbound traffic other than the Geography you expect users to be connect from, make sure to open only requisite ports. 2- Find out your expected traffic and its volume and put a DDos policy accordingly on public facing firewalls. 3- Check for usage patterns and restirct non work hours incoming traffic wherever possible. 4- Keep monitoring your security infra on Inbound streams for anomalies and prune accordingly.

Collecting network metrics and measuring them relative to time intervals will give the needed insight to notice the fluctuations. Moreover, there specialized tool with a dashboard where you can set alarms and alerts based on benchmarks relating to network traffic Examples are the Solarwinds Network Mapper, Prometheus/Grafana dashboard, AWS cloud Watch, and many others.

I think it’s important to note that with a DOS, or more particularly a (D)DOS, you can do a lot to mitigate, but there’s no one size fits all solution. You can block the IP, rate limit connections per second, scan traffic for suspicious behavior, block more granularity such as TCP SYN with data. However, a (D)DOS is difficult to fully mitigate yourself. A response plan working with either your service provider, or a (D)DOS mitigator, will be highly beneficial.
