1 Research the company and the role

Before you apply for a process automation job, you should do some research on the company and the role you are targeting. Also you can talk of any tools you developed in any of the process control function and how did it Impact, like cutting down on time to configure, testing, cost to name a few

One should be aware of the business processes the particular company is involved in. E.g. If you are applying to a pharma company, you should be aware whether they are producing drug product or API. It is also advisable to read job description in detail as it helps us understand whether we have the required skillset. Again with similar example, applying to pharma company for process automation engineer role should be preferred if we have the related pharma process knowledge as well as some experience with any of the control systems like PLC/DCS.

Additionally, take note of the company’s mission, vision or goals. I think it is a huge flex to the interviewer if you will be able to discuss these with them. Or even better, you can also show how your personal or career goals align with theirs. This will remind the interviewer that there is one applicant that interestingly has the same goals with their company.

If you are applying to a pharma company in process automation role and if you have previous experience of working on any of the pharma sites , it is recommended to highlight these points in job interview as the interview panel can relate to your experience and can judge you better. It also improves your chances of selection.

This is classic. In my experience, most of the process automation interviews include the questions depicting various scenarios and how one should react in such cases. Best way to prepare for such questions is to have some basic process knowledge, awareness of basic troubleshooting methods and information about industry standards. As an example, if a change has to be implemented immediately, one should be aware to check if its a GDP/GMP change, what is the root cause, what are the implications of the change, any requirement for approvals, etc.

Common questions are general questions that test your knowledge and understanding of process automation concepts, principles, and best practices.
