Preparing for problem-solving questions in entry-level interviews requires a combination of both knowledge and practice. Firstly, it is essential to research the company and the industry to gain an understanding of the types of problems and challenges they may face. This will enable you to tailor your responses to be relevant and specific to the company’s needs. Familiarize yourself with common problem-solving frameworks such as the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your responses. Practice using this framework to answer sample problem-solving questions to ensure you are able to articulate your thoughts clearly and concisely.

As a Recruiter, we will not expect you to have career expertise yet. When we ask this type of question we are looking for examples of logical thinking, emotional intelligence, and your ability to solve a challenge. If you are ever unclear on how to answer a question during an interview you can always structure your response by stating the Problem- then stating the Action you took to solve the problem, and finish by stating the Result you achieved. This is always referred to as "PAR."

Take your time: Don’t rush to answer the question. Take a moment to think about the problem and come up with a solution Use a structured approach: Break the problem down into smaller parts and tackle each part one at a time. This will help you stay organized and focused. Show your work: Explain your thought process and show how you arrived at your solution. This will help the interviewer understand your approach and evaluate your problem-solving skills. Practice: Practice solving problems on your own or with a friend. This will help you build confidence and improve your problem-solving skills.

Practice makes perfect (or I say better than mediocre). You won't get any answers perfectly but if you want to excel on your interview, you'll want to practice. Find online questions, tutorials, friends and hiring managers/recruiters in the industry that can help. The more resources you can pull from the better. Practice using your phone and record yourself. It might seem awkward but you'll know how you look on video/virtual interviews. Then ask friends to help interview and provide feedback.

When preparing, your practice shouldn't revolve around knowing the answers but rather on how to answer questions. There is a famous Google interview question where they asked what you would do if you were put into a blender and had 30 seconds to escape. There is an actual "real" answer however that's not what Google was looking for. The question was designed to see how the candidate would react to getting a question they were not expecting. The answer itself is useless. The way you got to the answer is what they're looking for.

It's all about taking massive action. Practice relentlessly. Find problems online, solve them, then solve some more. It’s like working out. You don’t get strong by reading about push-ups; you get strong by doing them. Same principle here. While you're at it, **think out loud**. In an interview, they're not just looking at your answers. They're looking at how you think. So, practice articulating your thought process to different challenges they might have at the company based on what you learned during your research. This will be gold in the interview. Never skip the research step! Learn the company inside-out before interviewing with them.

Existing problem solving frameworks can be highly general by nature — think STAR or SWOT. While I do use such frameworks, I insist on emphasizing C for Collaboration. When interviewing for team-oriented roles, it's helpful remember that not only are interviewers seeking to understand how you would tackle a problem yourself, but also how you would collaborate with others to achieve it while owning the problem and seeing it to its end. This is especially true for client-facing positions and matrixed organizations. Before answering a question with, "I would use x software and re-run analysis", think about how you would interact with internal/external stakeholders that could be great resources or those that would require progress updates.

It's about showcasing your ability to navigate complexity, adapt to uncertainties, and collaboratively create solutions that transcend traditional boundaries.

The commonly known STAR method is wonderful however the WWW works well too if you want to remember another way. WWW stands for "What happened?, What did you do?, What ended up happening?" If you're able to answer using that framework, you'll be able to showcase the value you bring.

I believe asking clarifying questions is important and certainly isn't portrayed in a bad way to an interviewer. I would much prefer a candidate to ask for clarity and then answer the question well, than dive straight into the question without understanding it, resulting in a poorly constructed answer.

Most problem solving based interview questions are focused on how you come up with a solution. With that said it is imperative you speak out loud when solving the problem. You may also want to write out the solution. always remember that the interviewer is also testing you on how you handle feedback. The interviewer may interject & ask you why you selected a method or perhaps you could try it this way. Be open to suggestions and demonstrate that you’re coachable.

Discuss how organizing your approach into distinct steps or phases showcases your systematic thinking. Highlight the importance of breaking down the problem, outlining a clear plan of action, and explaining each step coherently. Additionally, emphasize the significance of revisiting and refining your approach as you progress, demonstrating adaptability and continuous improvement. Mention how structuring your thinking not only aids in clear communication but also enhances your problem-solving efficiency by ensuring a methodical exploration of potential solutions. This approach exhibits both your analytical skills and your ability to navigate complex challenges systematically.

The reason the question is asked is not to find the answer, but to see what is your thinking process. Visualize. There are different types of problems - external, and internal impact. You want to keep your tree healthy and strong - what you should do as a gardener? The problem can be in the roots, and you should see different branches that are impacted by it - you should work with the source of the problem. But when there is a fire in the woods, you can try to impact the environment or adapt and minimize the risks and costs.

Problem-solving questions in interviews invite you to demonstrate flexibility and open-mindedness. They aren't about finding a single correct answer, but exploring various solutions and perspectives.
