Any leadership role should start with a clear vision that is articulated clearly to all community members. This vision should be supported by passion and commitment. The curriculum is the reason for the existence of a school. To lead curriculum development, you need to have mastered the fine art of teaching, learning and understanding the community's needs and not stop there! We also need to tie all the threads and pieces of the puzzle together such that the curriculum fits the needs, the culture and the context of the community that you set out to lead.

To prepare for this role, there must be the individual work done to uncover biases because no matter vision or mission is developed, the person's core beliefs will be evident. Doing individual prework can mitigate how biases show up in unintentional ways. We tend to go straight to setting up vision and mission statements without taking the time as a leader to unpack beliefs will influence decision making.

When I lived in Colombia, I worked as an ESL teacher for a new school in their first year. I needed to teach groups of engineers beginner, intermediate, and advanced English. I was hired & school started four days later. As a new school, one kink was that the students were allowed to choose their level. Yikes! There was no pre-test. So, all of my classes were mixed. The school also wanted each class's syllabus prior to the start of class...which...in the beginning was extremely difficult for me because I had no idea what the learner's needs were. I was also hindered by the cultural differences in learning styles between how they had always been taught & how I taught. Have a vision BUT be be creative. Be flexible. #1 Be kind to yourself. :)
