How can you politely inquire about your application status?

Following up on your application post interview is considered to be good and shows that you are really keen for the role. The question is when it should be done? Please allow at least a day or two before dropping an email or a call (Formal is always an email first). It takes time to take the decision considering might be other interviews are in queue and a comparison is required. Its a very common zest to know the feedback but just refrain yourself from showing it to them. Instead just a "Thank You" email will do the wonder.

There is no harm in follow-up. Some candidates may think that following up on the application may send a signal of desperation on the part of the candidate. However, that is not the case, follow up shows genuine interest on the part of the candidate.

First, if a interviewer or recruiter tells you when to possibly expect an answer, wait until that deadline. I can admit as a recruiter it is annoying when a candidates reaches out to me before the deadline asking for an update even though I told them when to expect an answer. If they didn't provide a deadline, then wait for a week. If they didn't respond, then send another email the week after. I would send a polite email to the recruiter or interviewer with a warm welcoming saying something like "I hope your day is well" or maybe bring up something memorable during the interview. Afterwards, ask if they can provide an update on the status on your application.

If you haven't heard from the recruiter or company after submitting your job application, it's a good idea to follow up. This shows that you're interested in the role. However, there are some things to keep in mind: 1. Wait for a reasonable amount of time before asking about your application or interview. Recruitment can take a while, so it's best to wait a week or two. You can also ask your recruiter how long you should expect to wait for a response after an interview. 2. Don't contact your recruiter too often. Contacting them every day or every other day can make you seem desperate. 3. Make sure you're contacting the right person when you follow up. It's important to reach out to the recruiter who is responsible for your application.

If you are working with a recruiter, following up on your application is welcomed! We do our best to keep up to date but most recruiters will not mind a bit if you do a check in to see if there is any progress and it keeps you top of mind.

In the job market, candidates typically follow up in two ways: through a phone call or an email. Some may use a text message or visit the office in person, though this is only sometimes preferred. Whichever method you choose, it's essential to be polite, show interest, and introduce yourself and the position you applied for. It's also a good idea to proofread any emails before sending them. Don't over think it. Just send the recruiter an email, ask if there are any updates they're able to share. Chances are the recruiter would already reach out to you if they hear anything but at the very least it can prompt them to follow up with the hiring manager.

As a recruiter, I am never put off or upset when a candidate reaches out. I appreciate it 10 times out of 10. Send the follow-up! My key takeaway, after seeing many follow-up emails/texts, is to please use full-sentences, grammar, and punctuation when sending an email or text. Sometimes candidates reach out as if they were having a casual text conversation with a friend. I would advise against this, if it includes slang and incomplete sentences. Try to always put your best foot forward.

Keep an eye out for news about the company or the team members you interviewed with. If they make an announcement or win an award, use that as a touchpoint. This kind of communication will demonstrate your investment in the company and is an opportunity for you to restate your interest in the role.

Example email: Dear [Hiring Manager's Name], I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to follow up on my application for the [Position Name] role at [Company Name], which I submitted on [Date of Application]. I am enthusiastic about the opportunity to join your team, and I would appreciate any information regarding the current status of my application. If there are any additional materials or details needed from my end, please do not hesitate to let me know. Thank you for considering my application, and I look forward to the possibility of contributing to your organization. Sincerely, [Your Name] This shows your continued interest in the position while also asking if there are any further steps you need to take.

Remember that hiring managers may be able to see who called them even if they did not answer. Calling multiple times and hanging up when not reaching the hiring manager may seem like a proactive strategy, but be aware that they may be able to see your name and phone number every time that you call! That makes you look desperate.

For a standout follow-up, wait a bit after your initial message. Craft a brief, engaging note that maintains your enthusiasm and highlights your value. Steer clear of being pushy or impatient. Respect their time and decisions, thanking them graciously. If the position is filled or you get no response, pivot gracefully, keeping it professional. Your persistence should shine, but always maintain a positive and respectful tone

Following up twice after the interview is a bit trickier, and requires a balanced approach. Begin by expressing your ongoing interest in the position and appreciation for the opportunity to interview. Politely inquire about the current status of the hiring process and reaffirm your enthusiasm for the role, ensuring your follow-up email or call remains courteous and professional.

If my candidate has an offer that they need to respond to and we are waiting to hear back from another firm where they are interviewing, I make it clear in the subject line that my candidate has an offer. In the body of the email, I let my client know that my candidate has an offer and their deadline. If there isn't a deadline, I follow up again by email and I saw something like "I'm sorry to be a pest, but I wanted to see if you've heard back about X, the candidate whom I submitted on..." In my experience, clients appreciate the follow up as long as it's done graciously.

Again, the hiring process can take time. There is nothing wrong with following up a second time as long as you consider the employer's time and stay courteous.

“Hey - thanks for the heads up, please can you shoot me over the feedback from the discussion? I’m always trying to improve and this would be super useful for me”. Short, sweet, simple.

There is nothing wrong with being disappointed about no longer being considered for a job, but it's important to be polite and keep emotions in check. Giving a rude response will ultimately burn any potential bridges you could have made with the organization. Responding to one rejection with sarcastic, threatening or inflammatory remarks will put you on a permanent "no hire" list, guaranteed.

“Hi there [name], and thank you so much for that update. Although I’m saddened to hear I wasn’t selected for the role, I loved speaking with yourself and [other interviewers], and should another opportunity with [company] open up in the future, I'd love to be considered at that point. I'd also like to stay connected with you on LinkedIn, and if anything changes in the future, I hope we can reconnect again at that point. Thanks again, and I hope you have a great week!”

This the part when you need to extract the most value out of a failed interview. Approach the recruiter politely and and depending on the interview phase ask the following: - HR: generally what didn’t click - technical: ask if you can get from the interviewers the specific areas of improvement that you need to work on - hiring: ask about the general discussion, your attitude in the discussion, what was the manager’s impression By employing this kind of follow up you will get valuable tailored feedback

Communicate your continued interest in the company, expressing openness to other suitable roles. Avoid arguing, complaining, or pleading for reconsideration, as this may harm your professional image. Maintain a positive and respectful tone to leave a lasting impression and potentially keep doors open for future opportunities.

Following up after receiving a job offer is crucial to demonstrate ongoing interest and clear up any uncertainties. Start by expressing gratitude and asking about the timeline for a decision. Seek clarification on any unclear points and express your enthusiasm. Request a written offer and discuss what comes next. It's important to maintain professionalism and send a follow-up email. Decide within the right timeframe given and inform the employer promptly. Effective communication creates a positive tone for your future working relationship.

Respond promptly thanking the employer for the exciting opportunity while requesting a brief period to carefully review terms. Utilize negotiation as appropriate by respectfully inquiring if flexibility exists on compensation, benefits or responsibilities. Once decided, advise acceptance with written confirmation and request onboarding details. Follow up to turn in paperwork, do background checks and introduce self to new colleagues. Express eagerness for first day and solicit any recommended reading. Cultivate the relationship by following through with responses, reviews and ongoing engagement to cement positive reputation as new hire worthy of investment in personal goals and company success.

If you're needing time to review an offer, agree a deadline between yourself and your recruiter for a decision to be made so expectations can be managed.

Most recruiters don't expect you to a respond to an offer immediately. It's completely fine to ask for some time and if you have questions, the recruiter should be more than happy to answer those for you. Make sure to reiterate your excitement and if you are looking at competing offers, be honest! Following up after you have accepted just makes me think you're excited to get started and I never see that as an annoyance. Email is typically best to start, but never be afraid to ask to jump on a call.

Following up after an offer gives you the chance to connect with the employer and it's important if you have any queries. It's better to ask questions before onboarding then to wait till your orientation and getting to know something different from your expectations. It's better not to waste your time as well as the employer if you decide to decline the offer due to any reason.

If it’s a recruitment consultant that’s representing you on the role, simply say “Hey, I know you’re busy, I’m still engaged in the process - looking forward to receiving an update.” If they had an update, they’d give you one. They make their money by placing people into businesses, they are waiting for an update just as much as you are.

In my career, I have always been honest with the prespective employer whether it's accepting or declining the offer. It's professional courtesy to inform the employer in a timely manner about your decision and ask any queries that might impact your decision.

Be Memorable, make an effort with the recruiter. When you chase them, they will always remember you. It works both ways!

During your interview you can ask questions too - so ask what you really want to know…. Ask your interviewers for feedback. You’re not asking them to make an offer, just feedback. Doing this will make you stand out!

Reflect on the company culture, values, and any recent developments. Research the team you might join and consider how your skills align. Evaluate potential challenges in the role and be prepared to discuss how you can address them. Additionally, assess your own career goals and how the position fits into your long-term plans.
