Hacer un DAFO es una buena herramienta para comenzar, y nos va a ayudar a establecer un buen plan de acción en el que trabajar.

I'm going to go against the flow a bit here. I have been tested, gapped, and 360'd for over 40 years. I'm a bit more practical in approach, edging people into what I think they can handle. I'll help them by putting some loose rails and maybe planting a few ideas. I can see tons of data around 360's, personality tests, self evaluation, etc., but at the end of the day, it's about gut feel and practical application by giving people a chance. You don't find the holes in the boat sometimes until you stick it in the water.....

I like the part about motivational drivers here. I have always called it "finding people's buttons". The headliner says it pretty well I think and leaders / managers have to adapt their styles all the way from micro management to knowing when to let go of the ropes. It goes back to what I said in the development area. Different folks are motivated by different things. Some want to fly under the radar, but still may be great contributors. Some may like to be seen and out in front of everything. Find the buttons and test. For every 5 great attributes that an employee can show and be great at, there are usually one or two attributes that can can cause dejection. That's when they need positive reinforcement and encouragement.

Según sea el caso, habremos de adaptarnos para poder acercarnos a él y establecer una relación de trabajo. De lo que no cabe duda es que no hay dos personas iguales, y por tanto dos líderes iguales. En función de ello, tendremos que maniobrar y definir la mejor metodología de trabajo.

Claro está, una parte importante del proceso de acompa?amiento es ofrecer puntos de vista, que pueden apoyarse en ejemplos o vivencias. Lo que no se podrá nunca hacer es enfrentar los comentarios como si fueran absolutos, es decir, cerrados e inequívocos. Debe haber margen para la reflexión y el análisis, que son dos herramientas increíblemente buenas para que un líder se exprese como tal.

En efecto, el objetivo no es decirle qué ha de hacer, o cómo debe comportarse. La cuestión radica en guiar hacia una toma de decisión de forma autónoma e independiente, basada en su buen criterio tras el análisis y la reflexión correspondiente. Le ayudaremos a contrastar, reafirmar o contemplar alternativas o aspectos no tenidos en cuenta, pero nunca para obligarle a decidir lo que nosotros queramos.

I had a couple of epiphanies in my career and I really have to thank great mentors (supervisors) for that. These were career changing for me. One was a supervisor who called me into his office (shy, introverted me) and asked me what we were going to do about a problem. I said, "you could do this or you could do that". His demeanor changed and he raised his voice a bit and he said "I don't want to know what you could do, I want to know what you are going to do. Make a decision and stand behind it whether it is right or wrong". My career trajectory literally changed in that instant. I stay in touch with him to this day. Great mentors leave great impressions.
