1 Maintain test scripts

One of the main challenges of test automation is keeping your test scripts up to date with the changes in the application under test. Failing to do so can result in outdated, irrelevant, or broken tests, compromising your test coverage and accuracy. To maintain your test scripts, using a version control system to track and manage code changes is recommended. It's also important to apply coding standards and conventions for readability, consistency, and maintainability. Refactoring regularly can help eliminate duplication, complexity, and dependencies. Additionally, descriptive and meaningful names should be used for test cases, methods, variables, and assertions. Furthermore, organizing your test code into modules, classes, and methods that reflect the logical structure of your test scenarios is essential. Finally, implementing the page object model can abstract UI elements and actions of your application under test while reducing maintenance effort.

Oui, en effet, il est nécessaire de mettre à jour le code pour être aligné avec les derniers changements du logiciel, en particulier en ayant des données à jour. En ce qui concerne le cadre d'automatisation des tests, les deux parties les plus difficiles sont : Comment mettre en place une architecture stable avec les bons design patterns et les dernières mises à jour mises en place. Comment maintenir le framework de manière à ce qu'il reste évolutif, surtout lorsque le code devient plus volumineux ou lorsqu'il y a plusieurs personnes travaillant sur le même projet.

Oui, pratiquement, le choix des outils d'automatisation est très important. - En fait, il existe deux solutions : soit créer un framework (in-house) à partir de zéro, spécifiquement adapté aux besoins du projet, soit choisir un outil sous licence garantissant le support et la stabilité. Cependant, cela implique toujours de devoir payer pour la licence, même si le code est développé en interne.

3 Manage test data

Test data is essential for ensuring the validity and reliability of your test automation, but it can be complex, dynamic, and sensitive. To manage your test data effectively, you should use a test data management tool or system to create, store, access, and update it in a centralized and secure way. Synthetic or dummy data should be used instead of real or production data to avoid exposing sensitive information and violating privacy or compliance regulations. Data-driven testing should be used to parameterize the test cases and run them with different sets of test data to increase coverage and variability. Additionally, data generators or scripts should be used to create realistic and diverse test data that match the test scenarios and requirements. We need to keep the comparison data user friendly for any future requirement. The test report should carry required standard test core verses actual score observed during that score. Also we should have data comparison option whenever required.

4 Deal with flaky tests

A final challenge of test automation is dealing with flaky tests, which are tests that produce inconsistent or unpredictable results due to various issues. Flaky tests can undermine your test automation confidence and credibility, as well as waste time and resources. To address this, you should identify and isolate the flaky tests from your test suite and run them separately to analyze and debug them. Additionally, you can use test automation reports and logs to find the root cause of the flakiness and fix it accordingly. Furthermore, retry mechanisms or conditional waits can be used to handle intermittent or transient failures, while test design patterns and techniques can help isolate your tests from external factors. Finally, review and optimize your test automation code and logic to avoid ambiguity, redundancy, or complexity that can lead to flakiness.

One should have a clear SOP to run the automation which includes test run, score comparison, limitation of the tool and known issues if any. The test report should have clear visibility to have all details to check.
