How can you overcome resistance to green design?

There are plenty of reasons for implementing green design standards besides the sustainability impacts. Unfortunately, the other reasons have more of an impact in a corporate setting.

Great, I think this is very important - often, it's not about pushing harder against the barriers, but removing the barriers. I would add one thing - identifying and understanding your own behaviour that might have contributed to the situation. For example: You want to pivot to a more sustainable product, but your clients don't want to buy it. What previous behaviour contributed to this? Maybe your clients got used to you always being the best on price and they don't link you with sustainability. Maybe you never communicated your values to them and now they see it as just a fad. Whatever it is, address it.

When it comes to green design, it often helps to actually address the barriers first and foremost. As most likely, this will be what your audience has at the front of their minds. By being up front with your understanding of the different risks, fears or costs; you can achieve better engagement from stakeholders who will believe you are mindful of their reservations. This means that once you get to the positives of your pitch, you will have earned more trust from your audience.

First and foremost barrier that comes to a decision maker's mind to adopt sustainable design is it's cost. Second would be it's functionality. Both of these stem from lack of knowledge or information. Seeking solutions and asking experts help in these cases. For example, sustainable packaging was slightly premium at some point of time as adoption and scale was lower. But now, it's on par or even slightly lower thus making it easier for people to adopt it for their products.

When you involve stakeholders, make sure to have a clear aim and that you are ready to hear dissent. When you invite open dialogue, do it because you are prioritising co-creating a solution that everyone will align with because they were part of creating it. It is essential that you listen deeply and with an open mind, not diminishing, criticising nor fixing anyone's ideas. Listen with an open mind, and also with an open heart. People have generally good reasons for believing as they do. Telling them they should believe otherwise only makes them more entrenched in their points of view. Open, inclusive dialogue connects people, builds deep trust and allows for shared solutions to emerge. When this happens, people align with the solution.

When I first started my Green Design, Sustainability related projects, most clients perceived green design with plants indoors or outdoors! Creating awareness on what green design is from water efficiency-energy efficiency, choice of materials, quality transit just to mention a few has been a challenge up to today! Green washing has also taken the center stage, with most google articles highlighting green design especially in green house gases emissions, certification of materials as an easy to do thing and find in the market, yet most labeling on products are biased... Another challenge is economic constraints- real estate investing is not ' cheap' when you add green design the cost increases!

Data driven initiatives that are piloted on bottom to top flow can be of great help in reducing resistance to change, these are principles right out of the strategy handbooks. However, specific to green initiatives, one can appeal to the person ethos of employees to drive change. This will instill faith in the process that the change is not only driving internal reform but contributing to society as a whole.

Sometimes, resistance to green design stems from uncertainty or scepticism about its effectiveness. To address this, consider initiating a small-scale pilot project to demonstrate the benefits and feasibility of green design in a controlled environment. This allows stakeholders to see tangible results first hand, alleviating doubts and building confidence in the approach. Additionally, the success of the pilot project can serve as a compelling case study to greater support for broader implementation across the organization or community.
