The first year of teaching can be quite intimidating. However, if you take it day by day and humble yourself you'll find that not only will your skills grow as you seek advice, but you will also learn from your students and how they prefer to learn. This will help you adapt to meet the needs of each of your class(es). Remember, as a teacher, you are a leader and this means you must take care of those in your charge and not make it about you. Lastly, read read read to keep your classes fresh and not purely theoretical (based on just the curriculum)--bring the content to real life to make it more practical.

Eliminate expectations. Educator expectations, student expectations, administrative expectations. Adapt to your environment, acknowledge your strengths, pinpoint your weaknesses, listen to advice (from everywhere), never assume, establish boundaries and when you start to feel comfortable, find something new to refresh yourself.

It is very important that you are coachable. Be open to other’s perspective. Do not take critiques personally. Record yourself teaching a lesson and then watch yourself with your mentor. Ask questions. Seek guidance when you are unsure. Don’t be afraid.

With a schedule full of 8th graders, I found that having them work together in pairs could work AND create something to share with their classmates. For example, they could choose humor and create fun we might enjoy, laugh at the joke two kids created...or explain why what ever this was worked or didn't, and learn from what did work in the project and what didn't...Oops are very often a good way to show what was supposed to happen and explaining why it didn;t. Learning and explaining can help the "creators" explain to themselves and us what could be fixed...or recreated if or as the designers choose to make an adjustment that might totally change the whole. project when explained .

Yes, I agree with Christine. You also need a contingency plan. Most of my planned classes never went ahead because the mood was not right, or I noticed something more pressing and inspiring they needed. In the end, I decided to have types of classes, and according to the mood, the weather, the number of absences, etc., on that day, at that time, I would choose one. E.A.P. teachers are student-centred and spontaneous, and I found this to be the best way to keep my classes engaging and productive. Skills are important. Tell the class they will acquire a new skill during the lesson today which they will practise for homework.

Try to put the weight of learning and discovery on your learners. Become the facilitator of learning, vs. the Wizard of Oz. Let your planning focus on questions, challenges and activities that encourage growth in student understanding, skill, and motivation, vs. endless quizzes, checklists, and speeches. As a first year teacher, you're just worried about surviving! It's critical to move beyond and engage your students through Inquiry Based Learning. This instructional strategy will help you to make connections with your students interests and backgrounds. The key is to be able to formulate Essential Questions, which is a skill in itself. This goes beyond ice-breakers, but that's the obvious, easy place to start. As you are busy, you can build up your tool kit by picking up a textbook on leading groups, specifically Group Counseling (there are graduate-level textbooks on leading groups that are quite readable and full of great strategies). Find ideas you like and adapt them for your particular students. When students trust each other, and you, the sky is the limit for what you can accomplish in class.

Depending on the age of your learners, giving them responsibility for their own learning and insisting that they make clear study goals for the coming lessons if very effective. They must have goals in schools where classes are so big that they have become factories. So, show them how to set their very own goals and make them promise to achieve those goals by the last class of the course/semester. Remember to recheck those goals in the middle of the course and start a countdown.

This is another invaluable opportunity to grow as a young professional. If you can, speak to your building administrator to be able to go and observe master teachers in your school. When you go in to observe, identify a specific aspect you want to observe, eg. classroom management, transitions, questioning techniques, classroom routine/procedures, lesson delivery, etc.

Feedback is meant to help you grow, not to criticize you to the point of quitting. Feedback is such a valuable tool, that is often not used enough.

Have faith in your skills and knowledge but not to the detriment of the learners' experience. Take constructive criticism as a route to improvement not a personal slight. Don't ever lie or make up an answer you don't actually know the answer to. You may look knowledgeable then but they will find you out eventually...then respect and your integrity are lost to those learners. Be friendly and approachable but know when to instill discipline. Most importantly...enjoy it; the gift of seeing a learner have that "lightbulb" moment is priceless.

There is a statistic that 50% of teachers leave the profession within the first five years. I was one of them (but I'm glad I returned!) because I tried so hard to be everything, do everything, for the students, I crashed and burned. To avoid this, teachers both new and experienced need to allocate time each week for self love: to pursue your hobbies, connect with family and friends, have a digital detox, work out, or like myself, just to catch up on lost sleep! Here are 3 simple ways to not burnout in teaching 1. Rest – In teaching, the job will never finished. Pick no more than three vital tasks to do daily and get them done. Guard your evenings and weekends the best you can. 2. Set boundaries – Many teachers tend to be people-pleasers (myself included.) We don’t want to let anyone down. But ironically, when we burnout, we are no good to anyone. Treat yourself like you would your best friend & and don’t take on more than you can handle. 3. Eat well – Drinking lots of alcohol and fast food doesn’t only mess with your gut but also your mind. Brain fog and tiredness might be more to with your diet than work pressure. Ensure you eat plenty of fruit and vegs and load up on 2 litres of water daily.

This is easier said than done. Somehow find the time to get some exercise, rest, and socialization with your friends. A good way is to try to wrap up your week with a teacher social activity, eg. after school volleyball game, Friday afternoon social hour, etc.

Know that you will err and you are not the first to do so. Learn from your mistakes and vow not to fall into them again. Keep your head up and never take any failures as an attack on your being. Never internalize mistakes. To err is human and last I checked, there are no cyborgs amongst us.

Reflect! Keeping a journal with standard questions can help you better analyze your teaching. Learn new methods and activities, use them, and then reflect on how they worked. Listening and reading about new strategies is not enough. You need to incorporate it in your teaching as well.

Always remember: 1. You don't have to be perfect. Not every lesson needs to be outstanding, and sometimes, even the best laid lesson plans will go wrong. Don't lose sleep over a bad lesson; learn from it and move on. 2. Be yourself. We can't all be Robin Williams in Dead Poets Society, or Sidney Poitier in To Sir, With Love. My mentor when I was a new teacher had a massive personality, and conducted classes like a stand-up comedian, with students hanging on his every word. It was a hard act to follow, and it took me a couple of years to realise that, instead of aspiring to be a version of my mentor, I should play on my own strengths and become the best version of myself.

Have patience with yourself. Don't sweat the small stuff. And don't get distracted by the things you can't control. Teach your classes, care for your students, and hone your craft. Don't worry about all the rest of the noise. And remember, what you think is a big deal -- the interaction with a student that could have gone better, the lesson plan that flopped, or the explanation that was less than a model of clarity -- will hardly be remembered by the students tomorrow. And the worst they remember is.....you're human.

Story Telling, is an art which keeps the class engaged. Telling stories with real life examples is the best way to keep a class on track for their learnings. The stories can be about yourself, or which can instil a sense of motivation amongst the students. Students feel connected with the teacher who share real life examples of the teachings vis-a-vis a teacher who just comes to the class and leave post teaching the curriculum in the class.

Keeping a journal can help you reflect on your instructional strategies as well as your emotions. Teaching can be a very emotional job, and many teachers have to learn how to navigate that emotional burden as part of the job. Journaling can help you process through emotions as well as help you track your growth throughout the year.

Get to know your students well. Often teachers are unaware of the hurdles that students face every day just to be in school. Important to make students feel they belong in your class and in school. Make them feel welcome and tell them they have a place in what can be perceived as a tough environment.
