In order to address the particularities of each regional context: local supply chains, material availability, and ecological challenges are key. The LEED certification emphasizes Energy & Atmosphere criteria most strongly, with Location, Transportation, and Indoor Environmental Quality at second rung. Renewable energy?resource density, off-gassing and particulate emission levels of construction materials, permeability of soil, and sensitivity of nearby waterways are therefore top considerations to suit the design of a building to its specific geography. It's crucial to incorporate local building code and guidance from local authorities and stakeholders into the construction process as well, even if this entails slight re-designs.

It’s important not only to demonstrate the long-term value of LEED construction methods qualitatively or persuasively, but even quantitatively. Return on Investment can be calculated for the lower operating costs, improved health of occupants, enhanced reputation, and improved investment prospects. As Environmental Consultants, the responsibility may lie with us to demonstrate the feasibility of the certification. With ROI figures at hand, contractors can even choose the LEED criteria that are most profitable - though this should be handled carefully and only implemented when necessary for the construction, rather than as a cost-cutting method that reduces the environmental impact of the LEED assessment process.

3 Awareness and education

A third challenge in scaling up LEED adoption globally is to increase the awareness and education of the potential and existing LEED users, such as architects, engineers, contractors, owners, or occupants. There are many cutting-edge technologies and construction techniques in development in academic Architecture, Engineering, and Material Science research departments as well as corporate R&D teams. Many of them haven’t even begun to be implemented in the standard LEED criteria yet, because they’re still considered experimental. But there is great potential to reach even higher sustainability standards by embracing these novel techniques in the industry.

A fifth challenge in scaling up LEED adoption globally is to align and integrate LEED standards and practices with the relevant policy and regulation frameworks in different countries and regions. For example, some countries or regions may have conflicting or inconsistent policies or regulations that can hinder or discourage LEED adoption, such as subsidies for fossil fuels, low energy efficiency standards, or weak environmental enforcement. To overcome this challenge, you can advocate and influence the policy and regulation makers, such as governments, agencies, or institutions, to adopt and enforce policies and regulations that support and incentivize LEED adoption, such as carbon taxes, green building codes, or sustainability reporting. You can also leverage and comply with the existing policy and regulation frameworks that are compatible or complementary with LEED, such as the Paris Agreement, the Sustainable Development Goals, or the Green New Deal.

It’s important that we, as subject experts, remain in dialogue with policy makers in the regions we operate in, to inform them of the scientific insights that are emerging in our field. Even though the oppositions may be challenging at times, it’s crucial that we retain a collaborative attitude and do not slip into an adversarial perspective. Therefore, it’s best to begin by sharing recent insights and revelations to garner enthusiasm for regulations that support and incentivize LEED adoption, and progress by demonstrating the benefits of such regulations to the region and the regulatory body at hand.

A sixth challenge in scaling up LEED adoption globally is to change and influence the culture and behavior of the people who interact with LEED buildings, such as occupants, visitors, or customers. For example, some countries or regions may have different values, norms, or habits that can affect or undermine the performance and impact of LEED buildings, such as high consumption patterns, low environmental awareness, or resistance to change.
