1 What are Taguchi Methods?

Taguchi Methods are based on the ideas of Genichi Taguchi, a Japanese engineer and statistician who developed a new approach to quality engineering in the 1950s and 1960s. Taguchi Methods combine statistical methods, engineering concepts, and experimental design to improve the quality and performance of products and processes. Taguchi Methods focus on minimizing the variation in product quality caused by environmental factors, such as temperature, humidity, noise, or wear. Taguchi Methods also aim to reduce the cost of quality by reducing the need for inspection, rework, and warranty claims.

In the past, I have used Taguchi’s methods to do designed experiments for solving difficult problems. Works great in those situations. Recently doing medical products and under MedAccred certification process, it is required you understand the relationship between process variables and your quality, before you launch your product into production. I think that makes a whole lot of sense.

It helps to minimize variability and also provide robustness against external factors affecting quality. It is one of the best experimental methodology, however not widely used due to its complexity and specialization required. Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) also serve the same purpose.

Genchi Taguchi proposed the concept of "Quality by Design". According to him, in manufacturing operations if a process and product is designed well, then the variations expected is minimal. One of his other significant theorem states that, "even there is a small shift in the process from its mean is resulting in maximum loss over a period of time" & is well known Taguchi's loss function. With this baseline, 1. It should be ensured that there is no Assignable causes in the process. 2. Plotting the control chart at regular intervals 3. Design & Implementing a robust process. 4. Adherence to 5M 5. Validation of change management before its implementation will help us to optimize the process.
