To make very good use of JIRA system, for the QA team, you MUST be familiar with the system and its functions and the ROI of the system toward the organization, you need to engage your team, to understand the system process, workflow, and or create your own workable workflow, to address your needs, as you can do a very good custom design for your QA / inspection and teasing process, maintain a very good reporting mechanic.

JIRA provides a lot of flexibility to meet our process/project goals like we can customize workflows, add automation rules to reduce time and minimize errors and achieve optimum results. We can link Tasks/User Stories with test management tools like TFS to achieve traceability. We can also tailor Task, Bugs, Stories, Boards screens by adding custom fields based on our specific needs of process/project. One can export results in CSV and Excel for sharing and analyzing results.

In JIRA, there are various issue types and even task types to cater our needs. We can clearly distinguish the bugs/tasks we log there based on the type of it , bug, task, story etc. and their sub type as bug, requirement, configuration, task, etc. We can introduce new issue types or task types as of our project nature so that we can clearly understand what the logged task is about. It helps in prioritizing the tasks we have based on the criticality of it too.

The more you dilute your JIRA with statuses and types the worse it gets. Keep it simple: - Open (reopen) - Rejected - Fixed - In dev - Ready for testing

Sub-tasks are great way to break the story into smaller tasks. Or major tasks that need to be tested on several systems/operating systems or mobile devices that are expected to have more than 1 day of testing or more than 1 person, can be broken down into several sub-tasks. Also links should be primerly used for confluence articles.

JIRA and confluence provide great functionality on each article and issue, its called "watch", just click it on the things you're most interested in and you'll receive an email if something is changed on them.
