Standing out from the crowd and asking the right questions. 5. Hosting your own events. 6. Deep alignment with your short-term and long term goals.

Networking is not about selling yourself, but revealing yourself. Focus on building your comfort with being visible, seen and heard. Come with a playful heart to have engaging and interesting conversations. Invest your time with current connections and ‘hang out’ in places where people you want to know are ‘hanging out’ too. Take the leap and start a conversation, share your perspective or ask for guidance. The idea is to widen the circle of people who know who you are. Set up your profile to do the selling or explaining of what you do.

I've made it a habit for years of contacting people to praise them for something they've done I'm interested in. A good design, a clever idea or an article they've written. It's a genuine interest and I usually ask questions, I want to know more. Before you know it you have a dialogue. People are surprised or thankful. (Think of the last time anyone showed an interest in something you've done.) I contacted a large design agency in London once to compliment their new designs for a bank. A half hour later I was better informed, they were delighted and I had an invite to visit their agency in London next time I was over. Be alert to opportunities, in fact seek them out, but be genuine in your interest and good luck.

Whenever you follow up, make sure your communication is personalized. Reference the event where you were together as well as previous conversations to show that you remember what was discussed. This helps to build a deeper connection. It also shows that you are being thoughtful and intentional.
