Get their basic details like Name, Company Name, Website, Profile. These are some great starter for conducting research. You can also get their feedback on how the person and his business doing and request if he can connect you with them.

Position yourself as someone that can add value. Make sure when you connect that you focus on building rapport and building a level of trust. Demonstrate the value you can bring to the working relationship. Make sure it becomes a Win : Win arrangement where both parties feel happy with the outcome.

When you connect for adding value rather than willing to gain something, you set the right base. Try to get connected through a mutual connect who can help arrange a concall or online/offline meeting. This is more effective.

One of the most powerful skills to develop is the art of building meaningful relationships. A lot of business relationships are built on the value you offer and can bring to the table. For example, you might have a client who has a product or service that another client could benefit from so in this example you may be able to create joint venture or business relationship that can be beneficial for all parties.
