1 Know your goals

Before you attend any networking event, online or offline, you should have a clear idea of what you want to achieve. Do you want to find new leads, referrals, collaborators, mentors, or resources? Do you want to showcase your expertise, raise your profile, or learn from others? Having a specific and realistic goal will help you focus your efforts, choose the right events, and prepare your pitch.

2 Be selective and strategic

As an extrovert, you may be tempted to attend every networking opportunity that comes your way, but that can be exhausting and ineffective. Instead, be selective and strategic about where and how you network. Research the events, platforms, and groups that are relevant to your niche, target market, and goals. Look for quality over quantity, and prioritize the ones that offer the most value and potential. Plan ahead and schedule your time and energy accordingly.

We also have to be careful not to dominate the conversation. It's easy for us to get excited and go on and on, but we increase the other person's respect for us when we are curious and really listen to them.

3 Listen and engage

Networking is not a one-way street, it's a conversation. As an extrovert, you may have no problem talking and sharing, but don't forget to listen and engage with others. Ask open-ended questions, show genuine interest, and pay attention to what they say. Listen for their needs, challenges, goals, and passions, and see how you can help them or connect them with others. By listening and engaging, you will build rapport, trust, and credibility with your network.

Yes and because we are extroverts, it's easy for us to get excited about what they are doing and convey that to them. That's a big plus. We also need to make sure that we do whatever actions we say we will. I sometimes get so caught up in the conversation that I forget to write down what I'm going to send them/who I'm going to introduce them to. The difference is in the follow-up, so write it down and do it! (Note: I obviously added my comment above before reading this section.)

It's always good to listen more than you talk. This is especially true for extroverts. You can share your energy and interest as you ask questions and then patiently listen. Be curious and be helpful when you can. Giving first is always a good idea.

4 Follow up and follow through

Networking doesn't end when the event is over, it's just the beginning. To maintain and nurture your network, you need to follow up and follow through . Send a personalized message to the people you met, remind them of who you are and what you discussed, and express your appreciation and interest. If you promised to do something, such as send a resource, make an introduction, or book a call, do it as soon as possible. Keep in touch and follow up regularly, but don't be pushy or spammy.

5 Be yourself and have fun

Networking can be fun and rewarding, especially if you are an extrovert who loves socializing. However, don't forget that networking is also a professional activity, and you need to be yourself and have fun in a respectful and appropriate way. Don't pretend to be someone you are not, or exaggerate your skills or achievements. Don't be too casual or informal, or use inappropriate language or jokes. Don't be too salesy or pushy, or dominate the conversation. Be yourself and have fun, but also be respectful and professional.

There is lots of research now on how beneficial laughter is in work settings. Bringing that energy to networking in an appropriate/professional way makes the meeting/event more fun for everyone. It's also important to read the room, if you are trying and it's falling flat, dial it back. If there are multiple people in the meeting, observe for a bit, and then join back in. It's rarer now than in the past, but some people just aren't ready for a lighter tone.
