How can you negotiate a promotion as a Servant Leader?

In my experience, I believe that servant leadership is the way to make your corporate presence where employees work with high degree of commitment in a positive environment and thrive for the goals set by the leaders, thereby achieving organisational Objectives. All these three things employees happiness, positive work culture & achieving consistently organisational goals are precursor to the success of any leaders. Job enrichment or promotions are by product of results .One should not be possessive for personal gain while practising servant leadership. Rewards would fall automatically as every organisation wish to retain the productive leaders. Personally, I have never bargained, however got nine promotions in leadership role.

I think many leaders view servant leadership as weakness, when in fact, it is great strength. A servant leader coaches their team, understands the needs of their team and seeks to meet them so both the team members and the organization benefit. The level of communication that is required to be a true servant leader is what will take any organization to the next level. Understanding the value of being a servant leader, and communicating that value as a requirement for anyone seeking a promotion is necessary to leverage that leadership characteristic in any negotiation for a promotion.

True servant is the highest promotion. If one is truly serving the desire of promotion will not arise. It is invaluable so it is above negotiation.

In my experience it is important to know your worth but also not to be too greedy. Its not always about what you want but also what you can do and give back to the company.

As a servant leader, stop putting your worth in your individual performance. It’s not that you are irrelevant, it’s that your opportunity to influence has scaled. Measure your worth in the quantity and quality of lives improved with those in your care. Your future as a leader is demanded by your ability to attract the best people and bring the best out of others. Servant leaders are not self promoters.

Being a servant leader is all about helping others succeed. When others succeed under your leadership...it is a direct reflection of your leadership and your approach to being a leader. When your team wins and drive business results, in turn you are winning as their leader. Capture the wins and the lessons learned as well because these attributes will take you further in your career. Helping others... will help you in the long run..

Servant Leadership is mutual when someone on the team wins we all win. Win, win that is the objective is to empower, listen to, implement positive input and give the credit to the one that brought it. No glory hogs.

Aligning goals in a promotion negotiation extends beyond personal advancement for a servant leader. It involves integrating aspirations with the organization's greater purpose. Aspire not only to advance professionally but also to align with the company's commitment to social responsibility. Showcase how your promotion can contribute to corporate social initiatives, foster a positive work culture, and promote diversity and inclusion. By aligning your goals with the organization's broader mission and values, you position yourself as a leader dedicated to driving positive change within and beyond the workplace, strengthening your case for promotion.

Priortive Value- Explain the union between how the company and yourself can benefit from the promotion. Highlight the contributions your leadership has had on the team, eg how team unity was strengthened.

What are you doing to add value to other people’s mission? Do you know how people are measured and rewarded? Work hard and long on those two. Then develop the ability to ensure the missions, measures and rewards of those in your care are aligned with whatever you deem “true north” to be. It is very difficult for your people to realize their full potential if you pit them against conflicting internal reward structures of others.

Communication is the most important attribute that will determine the success of a team, and an organization. Communication is the foundation... as the team communicates, it will be a direct reflection of the team's success.

One thing I have always found extremely important and helpful is being respectful to all colleagues. It doesn't matter if its the boss or the janitor everyone deserves the same and equal respect.

Respect is easy to give and often overlooked. I think our society; particularly workspaces programs us to view people as steps, and our interactions as negotiations. Remember we are a part of a larger organism and even if we don't see, understand, or know all the parts. The parts exist for the overall health of the system. The same with people and respect across every aspect of life. Think: this human is a part of the system and deserves to be valued, seen, and considered. Again decency, i.e., respect is free.

An example I have have seen... when I sit with my team and have formal performance reviews, I always ask them for their feedback on me. How am I doing? Anything I need to change? What can I improve? This shows them your authentic self and allows them a comfort zone that you are open for their feedback...

Seeking feedback is the best tool to have personal insights about your own professional and personal well-being as a leader. It helps to not only your development;also to your team and organisations fitness.

One phrase that changed my life has been "We rise by uplifting others". That's what servant leaders do. All the way to discover that the most valuable and impactful thing was (and still is) to uplift others.

Embrace the willingness to learn and evolve by soliciting insights from your manager, peers, and customers. Delve into discussions on your performance, strengths, and areas for improvement. Explore ways to enhance your skills, knowledge, and competencies, aligning them with your passion to better serve others. Be open to addressing any weaknesses that may impede success. By seeking feedback, you not only pinpoint opportunities for development but also demonstrate humility and receptivity to your employer. This commitment to continuous improvement further underscores your suitability for a higher role.

Inviting feedback, rather than waiting it to find you, is a sure sign that you are a servant leader. Those who don’t acknowledge failings, seek to better understand their blind spots and chase learning oops are only fooling themselves. And they are unsafe leaders. Because they model an arrogance that’s above reproach. To have transparency, to build trust and to create a fail-fast/fail-forward culture, it’s important that feedback is in real-time and delivered at all levels, to all levels. Servant leaders are secure enough in their role to admit weakness and invite others to join them.

As servant leader you should help others to celebrate their wins, pick up them put it in spotlight, create an atmosphere where people root for each other and help them to be better everyday. They will help you to fulfill your aspiration and promotion would be just natural step. Your daily enthusiasm, passion at work, appreciation for new assignments, transparency with work you put everyday to succeed will inspire others to make an extra mile.

Being an individual is important; however, you must realize there is a Team that can deliver more when you are willing to work together vs being a Lone Ranger. Realizing each person brings something to the table and encouraging them to use their gifts is part of what makes a Team flow. They may not do it your way, but you must learn that is okay as long as someone is leading with a servant’s heart and keeping the Team on track. When you are in a group, it is important for the leader to announce the goals while allowing each member to contribute by sharing input rather than telling those you work alongside how to get the job done. This allows fluidity and individual thought that usually ends with a positive result.

Nothing celebrates success more than a leader who shows up with enthusiasm and drive to achieve the next big milestone. Gratitude & Sharing confidence with the team will inspire them to do the same in the long run. High five, play a hype song, get rowdy!! Especially with new hires in a learning environment, but don’t stop there. Personalize daily huddles with veterans leading and celebrating their own success.

It is very easy to criticize and we are very hard on ourselves, so take a moment every day and give yourself a pat in the back for those little success items you did today, from making the bed, to completing that story that was sitting in the backlog for a week. Celebrate the GOOD, the GREAT, the SMALL, but overall celebrate your failures, because you learn nothing from success you only learn when from failure.

Es importante revisar constantemente que el talento con el que contamos se encuentre dentro de los promedios salariales, o incluso un poco por encima. También debemos asegurarnos de que aspectos como la inflación sean considerados anualmente para los aumentos salariales. Este enfoque debe ser proactivo por parte desde el liderazgo servicial, sin esperar a que los colaboradores lo soliciten. Esto debería ser una política organizacional.

In my personal experience it is important to be at a place you like, with a job or career you love, with people who share the same goals and it will help you get to where you want to be.

Emphatic Listening is a potent trait in servant leadership, when built on principles of purposes, collaboration and commonality towards servitude. With active listening and clear attention, Observation is more profound hence improves the feedback loop.

- I think that when you are negotiating a promotion as a Servant Leader you should access your organization, department, and the team (if possible) that you are looking to join. What are their weaknesses? If your natural strengths cover their weaknesses, then you know that being recognized for your hard work and any meaningful contributions you make won’t be far off. That would also make a great focal point to center your negotiation. Learning how to convey how the organization and team would ultimately benefit from your skill set can help create a level of transparency needed to paint the picture.
