Its taken me a long time to learn that a deal will only happen if both parties objectives are aligned. And i am not talking from the outset i am talking about all the way through the life cycle of a deal. Its important to be open and be prepared to adapt along the journey. In my experience, an exploratory call/meeting and follow up call prior to any proposal is necessary before beginning any sort of project. The exploratory call/meeting serves as your initial “getting to know you” phase and provides an opportunity to ask open-ended questions and gain a sense of what it is they want. The follow up call serves as a check in and an opportunity to ask any clarification questions prior to presenting your pitch. It’s always important to give yourself time to soak up the information and strategize the best plan of action that will resonate with your client when negotiating.

Make sure you’re not out pricing yourself also, be cost effective and give more value towards the project than the clients expectations.

The best way to succeed in a negotiation - which results in building trust - is to look at the negotiation from the other parties' perspective. I always start a meeting by asking, "what is important for YOU to achieve." When you understand the critical "deal breakers" from your counterparts perspective you can then make an assessment of your own and whether a deal is likely to take place based on mutual parameters and objectives. When people appreciate that you understand things from their perspective, rapport and trust follows. It may mean you have to walk away from a deal but better that than trying to force your point across, which is when communication breaks down. Experience teaches you; be prepared to walk away.
