If we get a promotion, it's important to be grateful for the company's recognition, but don't lose sight of our individuality. For those who aim to move into management positions, acquiring relevant skills is essential for self-improvement.

You should also seek feedback and guidance from your own team and circle of trust, you should as well ask for feedback anonymously so that people can provide you honest and clear feedback .. 360 feedback is essential, so ask from your colleagues, your sub ordinates, your managers.

In my experience the major difference between any leadership role and a non- leadership role is the power and skill to make decisions. There are many such instances which occur in our day to day operations where either we get to decide or be a catalyst in decision making. In many cases , our interest needs to be bigger than what is required out of our current role ( Outside sales). Thriving to stay outside comfort zone is the most needed quality to experience and enhance one’s skill set and in building up a super sustainable career.

Moving from a top performing sales person to sales management is a natural progression, in my opinion. When you excel and surpass your sales quota as a sales person it is a singular win. When your sales team excels and surpasses the team sales quota the WIN is multiplied. Along with the satisfaction of helping them mature and become an intrical part of the company's success.

One of the common mistake I’ve noticed is trying to use the same skills set from outside sales, going into a leadership role. Individual contributors often struggle to move the needle as it’s not only about direct actions followed by results anymore; There are different levers of influence and they are often not even linked to the new title the recent leader now yields. Ask to be involved in projects that’ll allow you to demonstrate that you have broader perspective of your business unit than the day to day tasks you probably do very well.

If it’s hard to practice leadership within your current role, you can volunteer in community service or any other volunteering group. Leadership is practiced by example at least with your own team, if your team considers you as a leader so you are a good caliber to be promoted to a leadership or management position

People have a wrong understanding with respect to networking & reputation: - networking means people who would pitch-in and vouch for you, whenever in need (not a 100k followers) - reputation is driven by multiple factors 1. Your work experience with these ppl in your close circle 2. Your attitude/navigation skills in crisis situation 3. Capability identification in others and trusting people around you with crucial work (helps in building a strong team)

Communication is the process of two-way exchange of information with other people, and information is any type of thought or idea that managers wish to exchange with others. The more communication between employees, the more intimacy will increase over time. Imagine a situation where part of the communication was formed without the need for words, so the ability to communicate verbally and non-verbally would increase. I recommend being frank and honest and recognize our common points with others and people with those criteria to extend our network.

Networking can be seen as many things but should most importantly be seen as a platform for advancement in my opinion. If you have an opportunity to showcase yourself and what you can offer, do just that! Share your experiences and be receptive to others shared stories. Be yourself, most people gravitate towards personality. This is what sets you apart from others and will heighten the chances of opportunities being passed your way.

I would recommend looking at the qualifications on the job description for the manager role that is available. Then I would document all of my work that relates to the skills and experience they are requesting. Next, I would look to volunteer for a "high visibility" project that will highlight your competency in front of the management team. In addition, I would seek advice from a manager that I have a good relationship on how they were able to navigate the corporate structure. Lastly, I would stay late and ask managers if there is anything I could do to make their lives easier.

When you are an individual contributor it’s all about hitting your goals. When you step into a leadership role, it’s all about supporting your team, recognizing your team and stepping away from the spotlight to highlight them over yourself.

Think about why you actually want to be a manager. It’s not an easy transition to move from being an individual contributor in charge of your own success to leading others to success….. test the water by leading others through influence in your current role….. it’s not wrong to want to stay as a successful sales person rather than having to rely on others to be successful……

It starts with your mindset. You need to have ultimate clarity that your job is to make other people on your team successful. Take on different projects in your company that will test your leadership skills like your ability to influence others and project management. Ask to be included if possible on personnel issues or scenarios that can help you understand what other skills are needed in a leadership role that you currently may not have.

You can not fix the problem of the sales manager. Keep that in mind for leading them. As a sales manager your target is to close the deal or bring things to an end. As a leader you need to facilitate this process and don’t step actively in this process. The more often you do it, the more responsibility you take away from your sales rep. Especially when you would do it differently, don’t step in but steer them to the right way. If you don’t develop/train/support your reps to drive their own business, you will be overloaded with tasks to execute and not tasks to lead. I refer to “Making Time for Gorillas” - Steven R Covey.
