In budgeting and forecasting, things change often, sometimes radically from one week to the next. The quicker we accept this as part of the field, the better. Often, the challenges come from our expectations not being met.

That’s right, Change is inevitable & in business environment we cannot control everything. But only thing that cannot change is historical data to forecast. With flexibility in changing the strategy (if required) to remain consistent as market leader, we have to change tactical plan accordingly based on the data received through feedbacks. Hence, treat every disturbance in business environment as an opportunity & have faith in your Data to sail the disturbance.

In the ever-evolving landscape of budgeting and forecasting, adaptability is key. Embracing change means more than merely reacting to new situations; it involves a proactive approach to learning and evolving. This entails a willingness to refine forecasts as new data becomes available and to view change as a catalyst for growth. One thing I have found people not utilizing is the use of technology and automation. They can save ample time doing mundane tasks by using technology in budgeting and forecasting. Using advanced features of tools such as Power BI and Excel can help automate calculations in budget creation and forecasts. Features, like automatically pulling in previous year's data, inflating values based on preset rules, and projecting metrics based on past trends considerably, reduce the effort required.

Stress is part of FP&A, no doubt about it. In my experience, the best ways to manage stress are plan ahead, over communicate and optimise files. Knowing what's coming allows you to plan your work and personal day accordingly. Effective communication allows others to do the same. Optimising files is crucial as it will allow you to quickly and accurately updates the models, so when those last minute requests come through, you don't feel overwhelmed Building controls within the forecasting files is another way of managing stress, as well maintaining a high quality standard

The stress in forecasting commonly stems from looming deadlines and the pressure for precise predictions. To tackle deadlines, consider optimizing calculation files in advance for a smoother report compilation process. Moreover, overthinking about prediction inaccuracies is a dead-end. Instead, delve into the reasons behind deviations, tweaking your model for future periods. Forecasting is an ever-evolving process, demanding constant monitoring and refinement.

Resilience under pressure is a hallmark of a successful budgeting and forecasting professional. Effective stress management safeguards your ability to think clearly and make sound decisions amidst volatility. There is a big gap between accounting and budgeting mindset. If you are an accountant you are accustomed to find each penny, you need exact deadline as submission of tax declaration in time is critical to the Company. In budgeting you are thinking of the future which may change (and it does) and variation of scenarios as well as changes in figures for 10-20% can be easily accepted. So do not put additional stress on you in case your variant is not 100% fit to the reality. In budgeting you will create 1000 cases and scenarious and will update them. Do not blame yourself in case you cannot calculate exactly the result of net profit, just add actuals as soon as they are availible to your year plan so you may come close to the projection.

The word budgeting and forecasting itself depict being proactive. Unless we plan ahead and don’t show that urge to question beforehand we are never going to be able to support the strategic/thought leadership in driving the organisation’s mission/vision to a reality. As an FP&A unit it is imperative to be able to think beforehand, question the basis, conclude based on research and then derive actionable goals for the organisation.

I tend to look at the bigger picture, previous profit and loss statements, current profit and loss statements and always make room for "incidental costs". Just in case, it is always better to be prepared and better safe than sorry.

Budgeting and forecasting are certainly challenging and unpredictable. Staying updated not only on the latest technologies but also on the dynamic financial environment, particularly those aspects that directly impact your organization, and quickly adjusting your budgets and forecasts as new information arrives or conditions change, will allow you to obtain better results.

In budgeting and forecasting you also need to consider the bigger picture of what's happening inside and outside your company. Strikes, overdemand, economic crisis etc will directly affect your budget. It is important to ensure you have an advantage in this three key aspects: - time - not only how much time the team will have if the budget is awarded but also, the timing in the world. - resources - how many resources you'll have in house and how many resources you need to get in. How easy will it be to get them? - money - how much money will the proyect really cost Vs how much money the client is willing to give you? Is there a change of currency? The bigger picture is as important as any of the previous aspects described in this article.
