How can you monitor and manage your facility's energy usage in real-time with an energy management system?

For me Energy Management is not just monitoring. But also should be able to assist me optimizing consumption based, availability for my critical load, efficient use of storage and alternative sources.

EMS is Environment Management system while Energy Management system is denoted as EnMS system as per ISO 50001:2018 standards. Its a Process of Planning, implementing, maintaining & continual improvement of Energy performance, Energy use & Energy consumption. For the effectiveness of EnMS system, it should be properly defined with Energy policy of the organization , Planning of objectives & Energy targets, indentification of Significant Energy users, defing the energy KPIs processwise equipmentwise or areawise whichever is applicable. Im short define KPIs & baseline of each process or product & after monitoring, identify risk & opportunity to further improvement of Energy performance , Energy use & Energy consumption.

In my experience EMS plays a vital role in understanding consumption and requirements of the process. Ems not only provide the insights on the wastes produced also working closely to get the efficiency of each equipments in better way.

In my experience, ability and willingness of facility management is the first step in selecting EMS. Have at least one energy management champion in the facility management team. Are other staff members willing to learn the building systems and software tools that are part of EMS. If this is the case, select EMS that provides you all the necessary tools to modify the equipment operation. Train the staff to use these tools and incentivize them for coming up with ideas for energy conservation.

Sometimes implementing an EMS for different systems can be complex and expensive, specially in retrofit environments. Started to use a real primitive EMS almost 25 years ago (early 2000's) for the needs of determining the costing of the company's products. I used ring energy metering sensors, i used flow sensors for air and fluids and a labyrinth of connected excel sheets in order to import the data, calculate the conversions, to create the proper analysis for the use of the relevant machinery. The need of reducing the consuption led, among other actions, in changing the production programm in a way that all the heavy machinery didn't start up at the same time, but in a 10-15 min difference. Fortunately, we had that opportunity since the production was working 24/5 d/w

Make sure the system you are using is accurate. We've seen far too many clients buy costly or cheap, complex systems that spew out inaccurate energy data. Energy data accuracy is key especially with an EMS as all EMS are not the same nor built the same. Do your research and due diligence and bear in mind that the cheapest or the most expensive solution is not always the best. Data accuracy, quality and granularity is key and not simply raw unfiltered, inaccurate, old data.

An Energy Management System not only provides a pathway for managing your energy sources efficiently but also paves the way for long term sustainability of your systems in place by means of constant monitoring and tweaking and providing insights on the usage trends, patterns and quantify the consumption as well.
