For a new customer, the foremost objective would be to bring them into your fold. For a returning customer, retention is most important. Though this may sound too trivial, I strongly feel that for the product or services offered by you, if you are on the top of the list in the customer's mind then you have done a good job. You could also do a customer survey and define a baseline for the threshold. Year after year you ensure that you outperform the previous year. One more factor to objectively consider is, your market share with customer if you are not the only supplier. Check YOY performance.
