Truly you can't. You just can make sure that you are writing a coherent and/or insightful research project. Academic and research industries can be very pretentious. More often than not, they (the nexus) propagate excellence but run on 'networking' principles. And it is highly unlikely that successful academics will let you know this pattern. You can make sure that you are writing a 'good' proposal and sending it to the grantmaking bodies. Rest is not assured at all. If 'in-pool' researchers are not cutting, and if your project is being considered, then wait for a result - mostly an arbitrary one. Further, it (success in attracting funding), like any other industry, works in a pattern/trend. You need to be in that trend too.

Once you have your impact goals, you need to choose the indicators that will help you measure and demonstrate your impact.
