Stormwater best management practices (BMPs) are techniques or devices that control, treat, or prevent runoff from reaching the receiving waters. These BMPs can be structural or non-structural, and can be applied at the source, along the conveyance, or at the end of the pipe. For highway design, curb and gutter systems are a common BMP. These raised edges and channels direct runoff to catch basins or storm drains. Stormwater detention or retention facilities are also used, such as ponds, wetlands, or underground tanks that store runoff temporarily or permanently and provide peak flow reduction, sediment removal, and water quality improvement. Stormwater filters, such as sand filters, cartridge filters, or media filters can also be used to remove pollutants from runoff using physical, chemical, or biological processes. Lastly, stormwater separators such as hydrodynamic separators, oil-water separators, or vortex separators remove trash, debris, sediment, and oil from runoff using gravity, centrifugal force, or coalescing plates.
