How can you manage podcast deadlines on a tight budget?

Let me be honest, we can manage an audio podcast on a tight budget but a video podcast is questionable because now the audience doesn't like Zoom screens. For Audio Podcasts, 1) Use free recording software like Audacity and Zencastr. 2) To avoid detailed edits, try and record your conversations in one go or record clean small sections together. Stitching them together will not take time. 3) Create your schedule and don't follow the herd who posts every week. You can release your episodes bi-monthly. One of my clients created one of the top-ranking marketing podcasts, and it was bi-monthly because both hosts have their businesses to run. So what matters is great content that is decently packaged.

En la década de los 90's, cuando terminé de estudiar Electrónica, quise hacer una emisora de radioaficionado, pero los costos de los equipos además de los permisos estatales, hacían muy difícil tener algo así. Luego internet mejoró esto, pero aún me salía costoso por el sistema operativo y los paquetes, aunque ya tenía un PC tipo torre que podía actualizar el hardware con cierta constancia. Cuando conocí Gnu/Linux y el software de licencia libre pude realizar esta idea hace 3 a?os, y hasta el 2023 arranqué con el proyecto en varias plataformas gratuitas que luego monetizan dicho podcast al aumentar likes, seguidores y otras formas que cada una de estas ofrecen. Patrocinarla yo mismo con mi trabajo también me ayuda a tenerlo en movimiento.

No fue fácil proyectarlo, porque el factor económico era el principal problema para conseguir lo que se necesitaba. Cuando cambié a Gnu/Linux y los programas que trae, encontré el software que me permite hacer y producir el programa de podcast. OBS Studio me ayuda muchísimo, ya que posee como ir mejorando mis transmisiones. Me tocó aprender en el camino, ya que no existe cursos ni para Gnu/Linux en modo gráfico, ni para usar OBS Studio. El tema ya estaba dado, pues si tuve que aprender por mis propios medios el uso del sistema operativo y programas, ese era el tema, ahora era la experiencia la que me ayudaría a poder hacer el contenido y explicarlo. Así apareció el Podcast AMPG - Hablemos de Linux.

Otro detalle a arrojar es que, en Colombia, trabajas con lo que tienes y no con lo que quisieras tener. Así que, con las herramientas que tengo arranqué el podcast y eso fue: un computador tipo torre AMD APU A8, 6 Gigas en RAM, 750 Gigas en disco duro y 320 Gigas en Memoria Virtual (Swap) porque trabajo con Gnu/Linux, el cual, es ArchLinux actual y dentro de él tengo OBS Studio que tiene filtros para hacer una perfecta transmisión por internet tanto en vivo como grabado Adicional a esto, el micrófono es omnidireccional análogo conectado al computador tipo torre. Gracias a OBS Studio, puedo tenerlo a más de 15 centímetros de mi boca, así que no se ve. Con eso es que trabajo en mi podcast.

Have a vision for your podcast. You can commit to a limited series if you don’t have the time and resources to keep it going. Also, there’s no need to have the most expensive equipments. You can produce a solid podcast just by using Audacity, ProTools and other tools. For mastering, if you are more of a producer I’d recommend sending in your audio to a mastering studio so sound engineers can get it done for you. Focus on recording, editing and making an engaging podcast.

Para la producción, me enfoqué en el formato. El formato es en un Salón de clases. Si ese va a ser el formato, ya tuve la experiencia en ese medio ense?ando mantenimiento de computadores, en medio de esa situación tu no controlas del todo el ambiente, incluso puede presentarse una situación que te obliga a profundizar el tema en el camino sin salirte del tema que ense?as. Así que, la edición sobra, pues debe ser natural, no forzado. De esa forma, reduje tiempos y agilicé la producción... El resultado...Los suscriptores va en aumento y hay mayor interés en el tema, y mucha gente que busca como aprender a usarlo sin complicaciones han ido llegando en cada una de las plataformas en que lo tengo. Esos son mis indicativos que la idea va bien.

What I do is I set a timing to each task. Example : 10h maximum to write. Sometimes it feels stressful but it really helps to keep track and to produce efficiently.

En mi caso es un poco variable en ciertas épocas del mes. Habitualmente se publica 5 vídeopodcast cada semana (1 cada día) de una duración de 10 minutos máximo cada uno ajustado al tiempo en Tik Tok que es una de las plataformas en donde lo tengo. Así que, en mi caso, los tiempos son continuos y semanales para un público que desea aprender. Ya después de grabado, ya sabemos que puede seguir apareciendo más vistas y eso lo he notado en los primeros en los que inicié y que tienen muy poco ajuste debido a que estaba en aprendizaje de las herramientas, que además del OBS Studio está Virtual Machine de Oracle, LibreOffice Impress que es para presentaciones y otros más que me son útiles.

What is the point of spending time, effort, and resources on making a great quality podcast consistently if no one knows about it? Few podcast leverage social media and as part of their overal strategy, and if they do its usually as an afterthought. Promoting your podcast effectively on social media is the best way to start raising awareness about your podcast and attract your audience. Don't sleep on this!

My simplest tip: only do podcasting if you love the medium, if you love talking to people because it is time-consuming and can be overwhelming if you are a one-person army. For non-profit organizations, build a team of volunteers who are eager to learn the art of podcasting. Assign tasks and schedule to divide the workload. Provide training and allow each member of the team to get as much hands-on experience as possible. Mistakes are expected and valued. As time passes you have expanded the capacity of the non-profit to take on more projects.

Start with your WHY. There are numerous tools available now for the easy production and publishing of podcasts. However, before you get into the technicalities, resolve to be clear on why you want to start your podcast. Establishing a strong why will help you see what you need and what is most important to you. It would also influence your commitment to keep at it in line with your why. For instance, if making money from podcasts is the strongest reason for starting, then you've got to consider it as a business and ensure you are ready and capable to run it as such. Meaning if you don't have the budget, what options do you have to raise the funds you need? If creating awareness for your brand is the goal, you may approach differently.

Utilizar herramientas para la programación de los episodios del podcast te ayudará mucho y para ello te puedes apoyar de calendarios electrónicos u otras herramientas disponibles, tales como: Notion, Google Calendario, etc. Tu programación te permitirá decidir la periodicidad del podcast y dimensionar que tan apretado o Justo estarás en cuanto a tus tiempos.

Para iniciar un Podcast es necesario que empieces con lo que tienes a tu mano. Si los costos de lo que necesitas es muy alto, te aconsejo busques alternativas de Licencia Libre que son mejor que buenos y pueden ayudarte a empezar.
