How can you manage healthcare staff to provide high-quality care?

After orientation and couple of weeks on the job I would ask permission to observe the intake process or discharge process for 2-3 patients sitting quietly in the exam room. I would then meet with the MA/RN/LPN and ask: What do you find hard to do, not so sure of, or that slows you down. Then I would add my observations and we would decide on a plan. I also did this with all new scribes and after a few sessions I NEVER left the clinic with incomplete charts.

I agree but must inform directors and administrators that it may be more important to Assess Your Needs and Strengths and learn to hire accordingly. Look for personality, proactive and people friendly hires that have qualities that mimic your offerings direction of your facility. Pick a motley crew and sit them together often.

I believe you also need to have people have knowledge and skills you do not have. They need to be the subject matter experts. Building a team of different personalities and strengths allows you to grow and stretch. Always encouraging them to learn from each other while learning from the team yourself as well.

Listen to your junior staff members (those without a management job title) as they have the freshest eyes and are in trenches day in and day out. Invite them to weekly huddles, or better yet have a quick discussion over a cup of coffee.

Make tools user friendly. If there is a digital information, no employee, especially in healthcare should be requested to manually add it again - it creates mistakes, which can cause lives. Just make it simple, for the staff and for the patients.

No matter the clinic, trauma and acute-care hospital, rehabilitation facility, the engagement is the same: patients first. 'Codes' were an everyday occurrence, demanding 100% commitment by the staff, an often rewarding, but physically and emotionally demanding experience. How do you manage staff?
