How can you manage distractions during ILT?

Create an Engaging Environment: Design the training space to minimize distractions and create a conducive learning environment. Consider factors such as lighting, seating arrangements, and room temperature. Use Interactive Techniques: Incorporate interactive activities, group discussions, and hands-on exercises to keep participants actively engaged and involved in the learning process.

Set clear expectations with the participants about the importance of minimizing distractions & staying focused on the training material Minimize external distractions Hold the training in a quiet well-lit room & by asking participants to turn off their phones or put them on silent mode. Schedule breaks throughout the training session to allow participants to stretch use the restroom or check their phones. This can help them stay focused during the training. Engage participants Using interactive training methods such as group discussions role-playing or hands-on activities. This can help them stay focused & minimize distractions Address distractions promptly & politely. Remind them importance of staying focused on the training material

Setting expectations is very important. The participants must be aware of what would be the key takeaways from the session. They will get distracted if the speaker is unable to captivate their attention. If participants are giving their valuable time, there should be productive learning and they must be aware about the expected gains from the said learning!

Due to my experience, I now have an information pack when I am delivering a training session. I send it to the relevant setting to help the team to understand the agenda and objectives and serves as a conversation starter to set expectation and clarify any concern

Dedicated focus time in the ILT can enhance efficiency and training productivity by leaps and bounds. And about such things trainer can sensitize beforehand.. maybe in the orientation session or in while TNI

Preparing your environment is critical; looking for a quiet and comfortable place is one part, but also having snacks, water, stress toys, pens of different colours, a notebook, or whatever helps you engage to take notes and make the session fun for yourself and keep you focused.

Organised space, organised mind. Focus on the task ahead and clear everything that could be a potential distraction. Minimise the chance of outside disturbances.

This includes ergonomic adjustments to your chair and desk, ensuring proper lighting to reduce eye strain, and setting up a dedicated learning space that signals your brain it's time for focused work. These physical preparations, combined with digital cleanliness, create a sanctuary for learning, free from the usual cacophony of daily life.

There are many ways of involvement, in the sense of Ice - Breaking Conversations. Asking questions & appreciating the ones, who ask questions. It is the only to keep others going & motivated throughout.

Engaging actively aids learning and retention and motivates critical thinking.This helps them to actively use the information that they have learned and clarify any doubts that they may have.It also helps in team bonding and creates an environment where everyone can feel free to communicate with each other.

As a facilitator - move around the room purposefully. When we move around, it causes a reaction in the room for the audience to engage with the content and the message, as well as with others. Movement creates energy; the audience will follow the speaker with their eyes, creating engagement. When we don't use ourselves as a conduit for energy, we lose the audience. When a question is asked, acknowledge the person, go over to them if you can, show them you are engaged with them. They feel seen / heard. In a virtual setting, VILT, using your vocal tone and pace as "movement" will help with the energy in the virtual classroom. Set the expectation at the beginning that you want volunteers and will call on people for answers too.

One of the best approaches is implementing ice-breaker activities. The ice-breakers could be of any type, depending on the age, gender, and interests of the target audience. The format of the ice-breaker should be designed in such a way that it should break the unnoticed silence and awkwardness (if any) amongst the learners, making them comfortable to interact with each other and the trainer as well.

use various forms or techniques, but tailor it to the audience you are facilitating e.g. demographic, business unit, leadership levels etc. One needs to custom make them for e.g First time managers - role plays, activity based etc. whilst for Mid or senior leaders you may use case study (identified as problem areas during diagnosis), discussion, and simulation based activities. It also helps to share some of your own anecdotes and experiences as they always have a way of breaking any barriers between you and the cohort of trainees and keeping the group engaged.

Regular breaks allow participants to refresh and recharge. Short breaks can help to prevent distraction and maintain concentration levels throughout the training.

Nutritious food during breaks may effectively sustain energy levels and enhance attention. Avoid consuming high-sugar snacks that may result in a subsequent decline in energy levels. Rather than becoming involved with possible diversions, use the break period to contemplate about the topics covered in the session so far. Reviewing notes or engaging in peer discussions enhances comprehension.

"Set Objectives"! Especially with adult learning, the idea of distractions has to be looked very differently. Setting objectives at the beginning of the session will help the learner understand his/her purpose and automatically help him focus better. While other factors like gaining attention - giving breaks - conducive learning environment etc. are key, setting objectives should not be overlooked.

If the session does not include scheduled and set periods for mental and physical resets, attention and focus will wain. Younger participants require time to allow those subconscious distractions to be addressed and older participants require time to readjust from being stationary.

Gather feedback from participants at the end of each session to identify any recurring distractions or areas for improvement. Use this feedback to refine your approach and make adjustments as needed for future ILT sessions.

Learning and development is an individual experience we learn at different paces and process information at varying degrees and levels therefore its important to conduct frequent check-ins with your trainees to ensure comprehensive understanding. Feedback is gold when dealing with people matters

I love using polls or quizzing apps to engage attendees as you go along. They are quick to administer. You can share the results in real time, and everyone enjoys being anonymous and making up silly names.

Application of what you have learnt is actually the practical way to demonstrate the learning outcome. And that in turn pulls your interest into the learning environment; hence reducing the chances of distractions.

Measurement... Measurement... Measurement! Any topic that is worth training on should have clear learning objectives, in session activities (to model what good looks like), & post-session activities (with metrics) for the learners to apply what they've learned. The measurement & accountability around the completion of these tasks will improve the overall adoption rates.

I think this goal setting before the training begins helps to mitigate distractions the best. Managers will not interrupt if they know the training is directly related to their goals. Learners won't distract themselves if they can see the inherent value in the program. Distracted learners are a sure sign that the direct relevance of the session hasn't been made clear or the training doesn't align directly with individual goals.

Applying knowledge is key to ensure learning from ILT's is retained. Taking a couple of minutes at the end of the ILT to set specific targets and deadlines to apply learning is a useful way to hold yourself accountable for applying learning.

I would agree that providing learners the opportunity to explore how the content or skill relates to their work is vital. However, I also find that simple discussion of where to apply learning really doesn’t dive deep enough in many environments. Where possible, implementing workshopping time for deeper learning is critical. We often find that as learners we get excited about where to use something new, but without practicing HOW we will use the new skill, it can prove to be daunting to actually apply it.

Don't be critical of yourself. If you are getting distracted in an instructor-led session. It is not your problem, it is the way the program is designed by the facilitator. Just like a screenplay for a movie, the facilitator would have to plan her/his program's screenplay to be engaging working from the shoes of the participants.

Use sensory activities! I cannot stress this enough. Especially when it comes to adult training (and honestly, with youth too), we often forget the power of play. Think about fun activities participants can do to open a discussion or seal in learning. For example, one of the activities I like to include at the beginning of a class is for participants to be blindfolded and try to pick out paper clips or safety pins from a container of rice. When they are able to see, it’s easy but not so when they have to rely on their sense of touch. The learning outcomes you could facilitate are endless. It could be about things not being like what you perceive initially, the importance of finding the “gems” amidst the noise or even just having fun!

Setting expectations ahead of the sessions is one way to manage distractions. One method that works for me everytime is ensuring that I take notes during ILT sessions. I stay connected to what is being said and summarise key learnings which I can always reference in the future.
