How can you make yourself indispensable in Technological Innovation?

I do not believe that one should ever seek to be indispensable. Our pursuit should be to always be relevant, if not in the current role, in some future role which brings your personal and professional fulfillment. Attempting to be indispensable means that the technology is leading you. Learning to be adaptive, makes you flexible and able to innovate even ahead of the technology.

Having worked in Tech Innovation for nearly two decades, what strikes me the most is the need to have a child like innocence to learning. The main difference between Innovation rhythm and conventional job descriptions is the need to be able to connect the dots across a spectrum of events / topics /concepts. Tech feeds use cases, cyclic effects then takes centre stage & use case drives the evolution of Tech. A deep understanding and analysis of technology is critical to be able to visualise the ‘art of possible’ with a biz use case. The ever growing Tech landscape keeps adding new Tech, concepts and problem solving capacity on an ongoing basis. The path to being indispensable today in Tech world is to be ‘a jack of all and a master of many’.

Be GREAT at solving problems. It sounds like common sense, but think about it. The world will always have problems, and fortunately/sadly, depending on your perspective, most institutions of higher education activate your left brain (from med and engineering to business and law school). If you become world class at solving problems (take applied design thinking courses), then you will be valuable throughout the roller coaster of life.

To become indispensable in tech innovation we have to have a clear vision of the future of tech and how it can impact our business. Be able to identify emerging trends and understand how they can be leveraged to create new products, services and business models. In other to achieve that view, we have to: Read about tech every day: to stay up to date on the latest tech trends that impact the company or its customers Talk to experts: To gain insights into the future of tech. Invest in training: To know at least a little about "how to do" besides "what to do" Tech innovation is essential for the success of any company. Who want to become indispensable in tech innovation need to develop hard & soft skills to lead and inspire change

The periphery of technological innovation always intersects with other disciplines, when one can connect the dots on why such intersections is required. This makes an individual become aware of other technologies and enable them to ask the right question. Where finding the experts to work with and bring their ideas to life is closer!

The real secret to problem solving is understanding the desired end state. Identify what the solution should look like and then remove the obstacles that prevent you from reaching it. There are often many paths to the solution. The creativity is in finding the shortest path. Being wrong is not a bad thing, it's just a tool for pruning branches that are not part the shortest path.

Creativity isn't just about finding innovative solutions or seeing the world from new perspectives. It goes further: it transforms teams. Those capable of creatively solving problems foster an environment conducive to generating diverse ideas and thinking unconventionally. When teams collaborate in a creative environment, trust is strengthened, communication improves, and a space is created where everyone feels valued and heard. This dynamic can be incredibly powerful in aligning goals and directing efforts towards shared objectives more effectively. Ultimately, I am convinced that being creative triggers a virtuous cycle that transcends individuals and specific challenges, generating an impact that goes far beyond expectations.

Think outside the conventional boundaries and explore innovative approaches. Bring unconventional ideas and perspectives. Foster a culture that encourages team collaboration and diverse thinking. Consider brainstorming sessions where all ideas are welcomed without judgment. Encourage cross-disciplinary collaboration to gain insights from various fields. Experiment with different solutions, even those that may seem unconventional initially. Embrace a willingness to learn from failures, viewing them as opportunities for growth and refinement.

Innovation is less about having all the answers and more about asking the right questions. To stand out in technological innovation, approach problems with a 'what if' mindset. Once, by reimagining a standard process, my team and I turned a routine task into an automated system, saving hours of work. Creativity in problem-solving isn't just thinking outside the box; sometimes, it's about reshaping the box itself.

A lack of clarity is detrimental to your growth as much as it is for your company's. Not being able to communicate something in a easy and seamless way is the first indicator that you might have not embraced the concept as you should. Not everyone you speak with has the same background you have, so the first thing you should do is find a fitting narrative for your interlocutor and adapt your wording to its experience and vocaboulary.

In the world of technological innovation, clear communication is your superpower. It's not just about sharing ideas; it's about making them resonate. I've seen brilliant ideas lose traction simply because they weren't communicated effectively. Whether you're explaining a complex algorithm to a non-technical stakeholder or pitching an innovative concept, remember: simplicity and clarity are key.

Clearly articulate your main points, ensuring that they align with your objective. Choose words thoughtfully, opting for simplicity over complexity whenever possible. Use examples and analogies to enhance understanding. Pay attention to your tone, ensuring it matches the context and purpose of the communication. Actively listen to others, seeking clarification when necessary.

I agree that communication is important and it should be tailored based on the situation. In some instances, it’s important to keep communication short and to the point; in others, it great to tell a story or include many examples. Each time, the communicator should consider the context and audience.

You should be able to communicate clearly what are the benefits for your stakeholders by adopting the new technology. If you can already showcase the benefits through a POC it's even better.

Change in life is constant, so it’s important to be a lifelong learner in your field. Outside of your field, it’s important to learn about the overall context and how your contribution fits in as well as learn about other disciplines. Taking an approach where you learn broadly will help you contribute by bringing diversity of thought from your field as well as others.

Develop flexibility in your methods and strategies, allowing room for innovation and improvement. Actively seek feedback and be willing to adjust based on constructive input. Continuously update your skills to stay relevant in a changing landscape. Maintain a positive and proactive attitude, viewing challenges as chances to learn and adapt. Establish a network of diverse connections to gain varied perspectives on navigating change.

You should embrace paradoxes and a mentality where you realize there is no one solution that fits all. Always try to improve, because change is the only constant thing.

Learn the sciences of experimentation, design and creative leadership. Although technical mastery is important, generating ideas and then knowing how to bring them to life maintaining purpose and achieving the simplicity that lies beyond complexity requires complimentary skills??????

Never be afraid of embracing controlled chaotic creativity. Let ideas, thoughts and discussions flow before trying to get too tied in to a guiding framework of discussion. Of course keep discussions vaguely in the subject space (control), but allow for people to take tangents (chaos). Often the innovation arises from those tangents. Remember that above all, innovation is a creative process that is best nurtured through free-form and respectful debate. As ideas emerge they can be explored through deeper discussions, and PoCs etc., but embracing collaborative creativity is essential.
