Do you get up each morning and decide to do your maths/science/geography/English/MFL/PSHE chores in that order? Of course you(we)don’t , so why do we expect children to face a daily timetable that does exactly that? The modern world is so inter-connected and the multi-media we face is all about connectivity and sharing ideas and thoughts. Therefore, we should try hard to make school inter disciplinary, where skills and knowledge combine to overcome real problems and challenges set by teachers and pupils alike. The EYFS has this in droves and a connected curriculum programme helps pupils understand the ‘why’ in a context they understand. So ask yourself, what goes wrong between primary and secondary? They bridge abstract concepts to the students' experiences but the effectiveness of these examples hinges on their contextuality. For example, while teaching a multicultural class, I select examples that resonate across cultures, ensuring inclusivity. Conversely, in a class with students of a similar nationality, I tailor the examples to reflect shared cultural context. This approach demands a nuanced understanding of your students. Avoid generic examples. Craft scenarios that align with their specific backgrounds. For example, in a business ethics class, discussing ethical dilemmas faced by start-ups can be impactful to their interests.

When I was at school, I (as everyone does) thought “I will never use this in the real world” Now I do a job where I daily use mental arithmetic, geometry, communication, physics, biology and quite often some terrible French. The way subjects are taught in secondary schools need to be more relevant. That way kids will appreciate more their value.

Connecting the curriculums content to real world situations will enhance the learning experience of students. Type of real world examples varies according to the content. In a math class teacher can tell students to bring the grocery bills to show application of decimal numbers. Students can find height of a building or tree by applying trigonometry. Teacher can demonstrate how probability is used in weather forecasting. Each and every topic has a connection with real life. As a teacher, we have to choose the appropriate real life according to the age level of the students and make them understand the application of the concept taught in the classroom. This will give answer to the question "Why am I learning this?".

In the past students in school were instructed to listen learn and repeat. However , with the changing trend , when a concept is taught by using real life examples, it helps the student to grasp the concept easily. For instance, the effects of Force ( make a stationary object move, stops a moving object; changes the direction of moving objects etc) can be explained through cricket game

I've seen three-year-olds grasp complex concepts like the solar system by turning learning into a playful, hands-on experience. This proves that when we frame information suitably, children's minds are incredibly receptive. Our role is to unlock this potential by choosing the right methods and tools to bring real-world examples to life in the classroom.

The most effective for me has been the use a mix of methods to evaluate different aspects, such as engagement, comprehension, application, and satisfaction. We can combine quizzes for comprehension, projects for application, and surveys for satisfaction to obtain a well-rounded assessment.

A few questions I like to ask myself include: 1. Does this align with learning objectives? 2. Is this current, relevant, and appropriate for the audience? 3. Do I know enough about the example to answer questions the audience may have? If not, is there a resource that can?

More than real world examples, it needs to be real world problems that would tie to something the students would be interested in and in turn motivate them to solve it. If the student is strongly motivated to solve the problem, then they would go the extra mile. As a faculty, it is important to guide them and keep their spirits high, and also make them enjoy the journey solving the problem. This makes the evaluation more important as it should not be tied to the final correct result but to the effort they put in trying to solve the problem, having a clear understanding of why certain steps failed, questioning their own belief, and finally presenting and backing the results of the study with evidence.

(It can be a virtual field trip too). -Simulating Real-Life Experiences: Simulating a real-world experience in the classroom can help students connect better to what they are learning in the classroom.

The most students are interested are real problems in their lives. Their hobbies will be subtle tools to help their progress and ask them about their real problems and the mandated curricula to an attentive teacher.

The more your topic is related to their experiences and life, the more tangible it would be and engage the learners more to participate in the activities. Good questions can lead to elicit more examples too.

We need to be more like Ms. Frizzle! An essential aspect often overlooked in education is the power of exploration.
