How can you make your lectures interactive with games?

I have even done a simple bingo type game where I put definitions on a bingo card and during the lecture, learners need to match the definition with terms mentioned during the lecture and then learners shout bingo when they’ve match the terms and definitions.

I have recently played the Unfair Game as part of the midterm exam preparation. All students work on a problem or question, then I spin the wheel of names and the students whose name is picked answers. If they get it right, they write their name on the board next to the prize of their choice. It can be a small prize, like a candy bar, gift card, or even something like extra credit or time on an assignment. The game becomes interesting as students are allowed to steal prizes from each other. So if the next student picks the same prize, they erase the name and write their own. The whole class was participating and all students were engaged. The game brought fun to otherwise boring exam prep session.

Yes I have used games in teaching concepts of Data Science and Statistics. Concepts of the DS algorithms, to new learners become faster and easier. Also, concepts like Anova and T-tests are assimilated faster. Students feel more free to come out with their doubts and that makes it even more encouraging for live discussions in the class room.

Lego is one of those I have been introduced to in leadership programs. Each member had a secret information, one person elected leader without knowledge to the group etc. Group had a unknown goal to build something in 30 minutes. No talking allowed! Not all group reached the final line. Clear how important informative leadership is! Joint instructions and goal!

If your learning goal is to be able to make a decision under pressure, try a role-playing game with a timer. Always try to align your learning goal with the game mechanism.

I use an audience response system where I divide learners into two or more teams and then ask interactive questions that I segment by teams. Each team can see their scores and how they are doing against the other team. I have done this without teams where people just answer questions but once it is turned into a game the intensity level increases to the next level because it’s a game.

Whether your class in taught virtually or in person, you can use online games to better engage your audience. You can chose from JEOPARDY!? and Wheel of Fortune? and 9 other games such as Detective, Scenarios, Recall, etc. Using fun online interactive games like these can definitely help increase engagement and retention.

Some of my lectures are in-person and others are virtual, but I've found that online games can be used effectively in both settings. As a part-time ID and full-time teacher, I dabble in all sorts of games and enjoy implementing games from one educational setting to another. Quizlet Live has been the norm in my classroom, but not in my ID work. However, this summer I used Quizlet Live in my cooperate ID work and it went really well!

Gamification in adult learning is crucial to making the lesson stick and to help work the room a little. Check out Menti! I like to start off by adding in some ice breakers - what do you know/think about statement X (related to topic). Helps in guiding the lesson and working the room. Take a break from instructing, and share stories and scenarios. We've survived for millions of years because of stories so let’s foster that! At the end, I like doing swag give aways, but tie them to a quiz. Love the competition. Sometimes when instructing a younger cohort i realize I'm getting too old when the game is called "Whose Wing is It, Anyways?" and the attendees don't seem to get the reference to the Show! All fun in the end!
