In my experience, the best way to do this is to require a holistic change report from all the stake holder. I know the process is time and resource intensive, but from what I have seen, this is the best way to make sure you asses, measure and verify the impact done. And you can be sure that the upcoming recommendations are more robust.

You should consider the strengths and limitations of different quantitative and qualitative methods and tools, such as surveys, interviews, case studies, observation, experiments, or mixed methods. You should also consider the accessibility, availability, and affordability of the methods and tools for the stakeholders, as well as the ethical, cultural, and contextual implications of using them. Additionally, when it comes to measuring social impact it is important to track change of over time to determine whether or not the intervention made a positive, neutral, or negative impact on the community you are working with. At a minimum stakeholder feedback should be collected before and after the intervention using the same data collection methods and tools so that you do not introduce bias or skew the data by changing the feedback mechanism or mode.

3 Address the power dynamics

A third essential element of equitable social impact measurement is to address the power dynamics that may affect the measurement process and outcomes. Power dynamics refer to the unequal relationships and influences among the stakeholders, such as funders, implementers, evaluators, beneficiaries, and others. Power dynamics can create biases, conflicts, gaps, or distortions in the measurement process and outcomes, such as who defines the goals, indicators, and standards of success, who collects and analyzes the data, who owns and uses the results, and who benefits or loses from the measurement. You should identify and acknowledge the power dynamics among the stakeholders, and seek to balance, mitigate, or transform them through dialogue, collaboration, transparency, and accountability.

To counter internal imbalances in measuring social impact, a colleague and I created a small evaluation org with a mission to support local non-profits to better understand program evaluation, data collection, & it’s use to inform mid- course corrections and improve outcomes. Personnel at all levels were involved with dedicated iterative feedback from the community.

Learning and adapting means using the results of the measurement to inform decision-making, improve practice, communicate impact, and foster learning among the stakeholders. Learning and adapting also means reflecting on the strengths and weaknesses of the measurement process itself, and identifying areas for improvement or innovation. You should create a culture and a system that supports learning and adapting from the measurement process and outcomes, and that encourages feedback, dialogue, and action among the stakeholders.

Ideally you want to reduce barriers and friction for stakeholders to provide their feedback. Some tips for doing so include: - Consider speaking with stakeholders about how they prefer to contribute feedback. - Incorporate feedback moments into occassions when your stakeholders are already engaged. For instance, if stakeholders are participating in a workshop carve out a few minutes during the workshop for them to submit feedback. - Leverage processes and systems the community is already familiar and comfortable with. For instance, perhaps the community is accustomed to sharing inputs during townhalls or on an online community. Explore how you can tap into these already existing platforms to engage target stakeholders.

5 Collaborate and network

A fifth vital factor of equitable social impact measurement is to collaborate and network with other practitioners and organizations that are engaged in similar or related measurement activities. Collaborating and networking can help you share knowledge, experience, best practices, challenges, and solutions for equitable social impact measurement. It can also help you align, harmonize, or integrate your measurement efforts with other existing or emerging frameworks, standards, or platforms for social impact measurement, such as the Social Return on Investment (SROI), the Impact Management Project (IMP), or the Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN). You should seek and join opportunities for collaboration and networking, such as events, webinars, communities of practice, or online platforms, that can enhance your learning and capacity for equitable social impact measurement.
