One of the biggest obstacles I’ve seen in an adversarial role. Provider Relations staff are focused on their company’s bottom line and feel that providers are trying to take that money for themselves. The goal of helping residents is lost too often.

Not everybody in a given healthcare system understands the mission and vision of the system, this results in misalignment of a system and an individuals goals and objectives. In this stressful time of labor shortage many healthcare providers just focus on getting by that day. Managers in healthcare systems often fail to involve physicians and other healthcare providers in decision-making. Decisions made often lack clinical perspectives, and hence fail. If salary is entirely based on outcomes, it places enormous stress on physicians and other healthcare providers. hence an ideal situation will be to provide a base salary with an additional financial incentives, when quality care is delivered.

2 Engage and empower providers

Another way to make provider relations more patient-centric is to engage and empower providers in decision-making and innovation. Providers are the ones who deliver care to patients, and they have valuable insights and expertise that can inform and improve healthcare processes, policies, and technologies. One way my current organization supports provider well-being is through a program that pairs mentor physicians with physicians in need of a mentor who is going through some type of crisis. This could be due to the loss of a patient, a personal crisis, stress or burnout. This peer-support program is making a difference for those who need it.
