Theater is one of the professional fields that demands the most from you. This is mainly because everyone's expectations of themselves and the theater production are so high, typical of artistic working environments. It is all the more important that you protect yourself adequately so that you don't get "swallowed up" by your work, become over-committed and risk your health. Depression, burn out, alcoholism and abuse are often encountered in theater productions because there is no sensible stress prophylaxis. That's why you should prepare individually or as a company manager with resilience-building exercises. Regular exercise, a healthy diet, yoga, meditation, lots of sleep, little alcohol and nicotine are particularly helpful here.

Learning, learning, learning is the most important thing about an artistic production in the theater. Theater is a form of artistic research and exploration, it is a laboratory. So use your time to learn from your colleagues, observe how they work and communicate, and try to talk to them a lot so you can ask them questions and learn from them. As simple as this suggestion may sound, there is so much power in developing you personally, improving the quality of your work in the theater and in the team and thus contributing even more to the success of an artistic production. And write down the essence of your conversations and the important advice in your personal journal, which you can refer to again and again on similar occasions.

No matter what career(s) you pursue, you will be working with other people in some capacity. Being in a theatrical production or on a film set, TEAMWORK is the modus operandi. There is no 'I' in teamwork. Bring YOUR best game to the mix. The triangle in the symphony is as necessary as the first violin, and both must follow the conductor. Co-creating, an evolutionary step up, makes the production more successful. I was in Toronto's first cast of Mousetrap. The scene began with one other cast member and myself. She, seated in an armchair, was supposed to open the dialogue. She just sat there, frozen. I quickly improvised the dialogue so we didn't lose the scene or story thread. Later, she was very grateful and the audience was none the wiser.
