I think to make a good first impression with your CAD skills is to showcase a portfolio with many different types of designs and skill sets. For example, having CAD models ranging from fixture/jig design to piping design. It also helps to showcase other skills outside of designing such as animations, 2D CAD, and exploded view drawings. It also helps to have paper work vouching for your knowledge or skill set on a particular software. For example, if you can get a certification in solid works, Autodesk 2d electrical, or inventor. This can show an employer that you have the knowledge of a particular software and can also show that you have put the time and effort into learning a new software and testing yourself on that software.

I have found that in-person events often produce great opportunities to have side conversations with peers. What many overlook are the similarities that designers, admins, etc. share regardless of the end product produced. Online events are great too and can open the door for a more diverse contact list. Also with joining a group meeting being a click on a screen away, the only general cost is time. This time pays for itself as you grow your network. Funny enough, on more than one occasion, I have initially meet someone online and then later been thrilled to have the opportunity to meet them in person. I guess at the end of the day, a face to face introduction with a handshake is my personal way of choice.

In my experience as a CAD Engineer, I have learnt so much by just discussing with other CAD Engineers, if you are facing a problem reach out to others someone might have solved such problem in the past, it saves you time. Secondly, it’s give room for job recommendations, I might be good with FEA and not so good with 3D modeling, discussing with someone with great 3D modeling skills can create a job partnership, I might have a project, and then that person comes to mind, collaboration comes when you have had and discuss with others in CAD, you also learn latest trends.
