How can you maintain your personal style when working with clients?

Know your style and SHOW your style. Of course, it is important to be adaptable to satisfy your clients preferences and explore new ideas, but those images should not be in your portfolio unless it's consistent with your body of work. Your style is your brand and the clients that chose to work with you should expect to get work on par with what you show.

Often clients pick you because of what they see on your website/social. So if what is there is representative of your style, it’s easier to transition into talking to them about using your style, after all, that was why they reached out to you in the first place.

Knowing your style comes from -and with- experience. In order to get to a point where it speaks for itself and has a visual resonance with your audience and clients, it needs to grow & develop into that exact and unique visual identity. Keep making work, keep learning & reflecting from each project in order to get there.

In my experience I have gotten to realize that projects work smoothly when you educate your clients about your unique style and approach to photography. In this regard you help them understand the artistic choices you make and the value you bring to the table. Managing their expectations from the beginning ensures that clients appreciate your personal style, and it minimizes the chances of dissatisfaction.

Tus clientes tienen que entender como eres y quién eres. Con ese conocimiento claro, las transacciones serán las correctas. Recuerda que ellos te respetaran y tú tienes que respetarles. Educar también es aprender. No crees expectativas irreales o infundadas, sobre lo que eres y lo que puedes hacer, pues el fracaso es inminente cuando intentas hacer algo que no conoces a profundidad, y solucionar este fracaso y tú reputación profesional será muy difícil.

Clients will often have something specific in mind when they approach you, and that's always something to have in mind. However, when a client specifically comes to you, they have already seen something they like about your art. Asking your client what they saw that drew their attention, and extrapolate on that so you can better focus your forward motion to please you both in the project.

Customer sometimes if not most don't know the how and put all the ideas on the table. Just be clear with them in terms of the goals and season the project with a little bit of your style keeping the original request in mind.

When you listen to clients too much, some have the superior reasoning and power to convince you go against your norms... Style could be limiting with clients...if care is not taken.

This will depend heavily on your primary contact. There are clients who are individuals you can talk to on a one to one basis, but there are also clients who are larger conglomerates who have a spokesperson who you'll need to wait on to get cohesive feedback. For one on one, keep it loose but professional, make sure questions and conversation are focused on the project and inspirations for the project. For spokespersons, they're speaking for a group and will often have a direction they want to go in, but it will take time to get there. It's best to be patient above all else, and check in regularly to make sure communication is happening.

Your style is great but if a client wants me to do something different I am always game. You learn and a photographer that compliments the client with what they want will be in business much longer.

Listening to your client's is quite helpful especially during their consultation process as this helps you to know exactly what they want which would in turn help to direct you in creating those beautiful memories that would make their heart glad. In my field of photography, listening to your client's and also taking their suggestions help me work better with their babies because they know their children better than I do and this in turn helps us have a great session together.

First, understand the customer’s identity and message. If possible, schedule a meeting with the client to prepare a briefing. A simple way is to view the website and social media, but this does not mean that it's the most complete way to understand the customer's identity. You don't need to reinvent the wheel, try to present the project, with a graphic language very similar to the current client image.

El proceso de adaptabilidad, hace la diferencia entre un profesional línea dura y otro de línea flexible. Esto no significa que dejes de lado tu estilo, tu forma o tus principios, significa adaptarlos a una necesidad específica, sin dejar de ser quienes somos, por el contrario. Practicing alternative art styles and having a history of working in a range that you can display to a client not only helps communication but helps with your ability to provide a service. Clients that come to you already WANT you, you just need to prove to them that the choice was a good one. Clarifying what the client saw in your work, that drew them to you, can give you so much insight into what a client actually wants to created. Then when you have that knowledge, you have the data you need to flex your skills to your advantage.

When a client comes to you, it’s after days and possibly weeks of shopping around. Recognize that. They’re coming to you because after looking at your portfolio, they felt that your style is something that could match their vision and identity. I firmly believe that a client-photographer relationship is a marriage between two different but similar aesthetics. Both you and your client want to walk away with photos that represent and enrich your personal identities. Work with that commonality. A good photographer has a personal style but a great photographer knows the essence of their style and can adapt it as needed to make themselves and their clients happy.

Adapt to the situation. If the client is inspired by an initial sketch and wants to move in a certain direction based on that, give them space to voice their thoughts. Be specific, be clear and be patient in this process, without doing a 'complete overhaul' on your artistic integrity. Working with clients only works when you listen to their demands as well as painting them a realistic picture of both expectancy and your vision as well.

In addition to adapting to an ongoing process based on an initial proposal/sketch, don't shy away from being transparent about how many times a sketch or an idea could (or should) be revised in order for the process to move forward. Be precise about which direction you as an artist want to go in with the project just as much as you incorporate the client's wishes.

Clients, especially professional level ones, very rarely actually utilize the programs and work flow native to a professional artist. A lot of the larger businesses don't understand the time and effort it takes, the personal costs and levels of experience earned that allow you to do what you do. Make sure to have a clear and concise Terms of Service that dictates what you do, how you do it, the time it takes and the rate at which you charge that time, including late stage changes and re-draws. When the client inevitably tries to overstep, remind them of your ToS and that they agreed to that ToS, and clarify where they have overstepped to prevent future pushes.

This is also very important as your might be faced with client's who want you to create outside your side which might make you uncomfortable and so if it does, explain nicely to them and ensure you make clear to them why you would rather maintain your style which is your brand.

While adapting your style is important, it should never compromise your integrity. It's crucial to stand firm on your core values and principles. Clearly communicate your boundaries and limits to your clients, and be respectful but firm when faced with unreasonable or unethical requests. Whether it involves rejecting requests to copy someone else's work, violate privacy, or alter appearances, explain your reasons and propose alternatives that align with your style and ethical standards. Standing your ground in these situations is essential for preserving your reputation, maintaining your artistic identity, and attracting clients who align with your values.

You only have work according to the budget, but your work isn’t done after delivering to the client. Client won’t pay you to be you. That’s your personal preference and if you want to maintain your style you need to put in extra to enhance the project. In a project you are paid at a certain level of work buy your journey doesn’t end at this point. Impoverish further to maintain your own standards and show case it as possibility you can offer.

I never really thought I had a style until people kept telling me they can tell when it’s my image. While I was flattered I was really worried that I might get pigeon holed and limit my market. My style has developed over time but I’ve become more comfortable with what I do, what I like to do but also what I should let others handle! Clients will normally come to you because they think they need something, but hopefully you’ll work with them and support them as things evolve. The collaboration should improve the output and you may find that your style adapts overtime…one way or the other ;)

For me, shooting daily in my "downtime" keeps my personal voice fresh in both composition and current color palettes. The smartphone and places where tourists tend to be offers me access to willing subjects.

Muchas veces nos dejamos llevar por lo que está de moda en estilo o edición de fotografía, pero es mejor conocer tu propio estilo e ir investigando sobre todas las novedades que van apareciendo y que son actuales, es decir, no implantar la novedad al 100% si no seguir tu instinto a la vez que vas agregando esos toques frescos de las modas. Pero sin duda, cada fotógrafo tiene su estilo, usa un tipo de objetivo, le interesa más un motivo en concreto, es más sensible, más técnico, edita de X manera. Creo que aunque nos adaptemos a los gustos y peticiones de los clientes debemos de mantener un poco nuestra esencia, en el tipo de iluminación, profundidad de campo, uso de lentes, edición, tipos de planos.

Usually I don't offer my perspective for obvious reasons, but this one is a no brainer. While everyone mentioned their photography style, consider your personal style. You're that first impression the client sees. I've worked with a lot of talented photographers, yet most don't have a style. They wear whatever is comfortable. If you shoot fashion wouldn't it make scene to look the part? Not saying to over do it, but you need to put some effort in your appearance. You don't want "to look from hunger" We know image is everything. So have a personal style thats casual well thought out and efforless. You're selling a total look. And their first impression, is you.
