In my experience, it’s okay to make scheduling the next touch base an agenda item for an upcoming meeting. This practice allows you to gauge when your client feels the next touch base is needed based on the current status. If there’s a concern that you might lose contact, be sure to gently suggest a timeframe for your next chat.

It is important to develop long client relationships. For that expectations must be clearly set-up so as to avoid miscommunication. Begin with consistent phone calls, emails, messages and give them time to respond (usually a week or so) before going for a follow-up, discuss key propositions of your product, including its pros, the value it adds and strengthen your bond by initiating personalised communication along with the business agenda. Always remember to be respectful to them and their time even if it requires you to be flexible with your schedule because as said "Customer is the King" one needs to take care of the client. Showcase your product as specially tailor-made for their requirements with sample examples of beneficiaries.

What I have found successful are “Hot Buttons” such as remembering the client’s birthday, football team, kid’s birthday, favorite food, etc…. The list goes on. FOLLOW UP, always! See the bigger picture, take away pride and ego, and listen to your clients if you want the long term. I ask every client how they feel about my services, what I may do better, more communication, less communication, etc. Listen to your clients and hone the information. The client is not always right, but at the same time they are 110% of the time. That’s why they are your client and using your services. If one listens ACTIVELY, it may provide information to help your brand, your product, or YOU in your craft. Always, ALWAYS follow up!

I am a strong believer of personal touch. For those who can deal with your true self are most likely long-term clients who feel some sort of connectivity with your personal style. Do not try to pretend to be something you are not, as this in essence does not provide any value for either you or your business contact.

In my opinion, dealing with a client shouldn't be pushing a product or even necessarily 'solving a problem'. The most important thing in business development, sales or any related field is a bonding process that takes place with you and your client overtime. The feeling that you are speaking the same language and are generally enthusiastic to deal with one another. Try talking about some other things then just your product or the related deadlines for example. Generally ask what their country is like, what are their plans for the weekend. People buy from people first, second comes the product.

Dealing with a client should be frequent, consistent and effective. You can use different ways of communication and be flexible. Face to face meetings are ideally the best approach. It helps you as a company representative to read the body language of the person you’re meeting and gives you a better chance in closing deals, solving out issues or brainstorming together for something entirely new.
