Maintaining positive relationships during pre production involves clear communication and collaboration. Establishing clear team goals, scope of work, expectations, and boundaries at the start of the project are important in keeping momentum going for any team work, especially in the pre production stage. I want to make sure every person on the team is aware of what the responsibilities entail and encourage everyone to communicate updates, questions, and challenges as they come up. Open communication and clear direction are key! Regular team and individual check ins are a good tool in making sure everyone is on the same page moving forward.

With any new team, it is important to clearly communicate the roles and expectations with everyone up front and to keep that communication regular. The teams that do the best work have some kind of check-in every single day. If you build good relationships, you build enough trust to critically discuss each other's ideas without hurting feelings. Regular face time also ensures that everyone sees what the vision and scope is, sees who's struggling, ad see's each other's excitement.

The first and most important item for everyone to understand is where are the songwriters and musicians in their career. First project? Follow up to a successful release? The second point is to draw up attainable goals with target dates. The third is to cement in stone music pieces that are finished and ready to serious recording. Fourth is to have fun and be very creative with the remaining songs to develop. Finally, always be ready for the unexpected last minute "piece out of nowhere" that comes into development. The band KANSAS had their 2 biggest hits come together almost as an afterthought.

This tipp is good, but I want to add, that you should not only "play the boss". To have a good team for me means, that you are also welcome the ideas of others, if they have one. Listen to them, when it is good, try it, when it seems not so good, you still can say, that you do not want to do it. I was working myself at some sets, where directors were too harsh and even yelled at their employees. This is the worst atmosphere you can create. When something happens, say it in a certain way and that one, who is meant with it, will understand it. I would only yell, if someone has a problem with hearing, but not, when a cable is not there, which should be, etc. Let them be engaged and let them feel important, then you create the best atmosphere.

Selecting the right team and defining roles is indeed a pivotal aspect of pre-production. However, it's worth noting that assembling a team that is both skilled and reliable can often be a challenge. In my experience, maintaining a database of professionals with whom I've had successful collaborations in the past, or those I'm interested in working with, has been invaluable. When it comes to outlining a project, clarity is key. Providing a detailed project brief to potential team members is essential. Additionally, conducting small, preliminary tests or trials can be an effective strategy for assessing compatibility and skill, ensuring that the team chosen aligns perfectly with the project's requirements and the client's vision.

Prioritize Skills and Experience: Seek talent beyond technical expertise: Look for individuals who are not only competent in their fields but also possess excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.

I think there should be a sense of collaboration but at the same time there can't be too many chefs in the kitchen as that will spoil the broth. But in saying that I am an advocate of making sure everyone feels included and counted and that their ideas are atleast considered as this is how everyone can become invested in the project. At the end of the day its what is best for the project that matters the most.

Having the right team , you will get positive energy and good collaboration in work , having the right will make the project looks easier and at some stage when things could go , you will have good ideas from your team that will provide many options available for you.

At first, it is important to settle expectations related to the any feedback loop i.e, timing, recurrency and scope. For example, I was working on a TV show and we had agreed on Mondays mornings to meet and share the state of the project and the expectations for the week and then we met on Fridays evening to evaluate the performance during the week. I will point out that at the time I was working with almost no supervision and had gained the trust of my director to be in charge of major creative decisions.

In my opinion, communication is probably the backbone of a great live production. By just having short & simple briefs beforehand can ultimately change the outcome of the work throughout the coverage.

From this perspective, I firmly believe that there's rarely such a thing as 'too much communication.' Regular updates, whether they're about progress, challenges, or changes, help in building trust and transparency with clients. It's essential to keep them in the loop, actively seeking their feedback and addressing their concerns promptly. This approach not only ensures that they feel valued and involved but also significantly mitigates the risk of misunderstandings or dissatisfaction.

Make sure clear expectations are made from the get go. Repeat the plan multiple times back to the client to affirm they agree everyone is on the same page. Communication via email is also a plus even if it's recapping a meeting or conversation that way everyone is on the same page about what is happening.

I always say if something didn't go wrong during your production did you even have a shoot? Just remember things don't always go as planned. Sometimes people don't show up on time or things don't get delivered when expected, being flexible and willing to adjust without letting things irritate you will make a difference in the vibes on set and what the client experiences. Your attitude and problem solving skills will shine if you are able to pivot.

In film production, flexibility is key due to the ever-present possibility of unforeseen changes. It's crucial not just to adapt but to be prepared. Learning from both our own experiences and others' can be a game-changer. Having a plan B (and even a plan C) ready ensures we can handle surprises effectively and keep the project moving smoothly. That being said as the relationship between a client and the supplier is a collaborative one, neither party should be left with the feeling that their time is being taken advantage of.

One thing I have found helpful in production especially as it concerns pre production stage/planing stage is Flexibility and openness to suggestions from other team members. You must not accept every suggestions from your team members but only listening to them alone gives your team members this confidence and sense of belonging, you may logically play done on some of their points while the valid points can be restructured to suit to the main production. You might be surprised at some of the mind-blowing ideas that an ordinary team member can bring to the table during the pre production stage.

At times, not everything will go according to plan despite much time spent on preparation. It is always important to keep an open mind before you go live because factors such as communication breakdown, Internet issues & workflow mismanagement can affect everyone involved in live production. Producers must ensure that everyone is aware of what is going on behind the scenes to deliver the smoothness of the workflow prior to the start of the broadcast coverage.

One thing I found helpful during production is the ability to be accommodating even if it doesn't work for me. My team gets what ever they need for the project to be done. I remember serving my team members food on location without having any left for me but I was happy my team could be refreshed to finish with the project. And we won the prize for best film project for the programme.

We often heard bosses getting praised and get promoted for getting the jobs done amazingly but behind every success is always a big team who give their all to make it happened. A big part of (the different stages of) production requires working with people so it is important that you take time to understand people and actually treat them like people. I also agree that hiring the best hands is important for a number of reasons like helping to reduce conflict, helping to avoid errors, saving you time, and giving you the best quality of work. There is nothing like having a team that truly gets it!

My experience coaching kids taught me that a little praise significantly boosts their drive to improve. It's crucial for teams to know their strengths and areas for growth in a supportive, not condescending way. The goal is to guide, not dictate. This approach fosters a motivated, growth-oriented environment.

You have to remember that you’re basically a plumber. People call you to solve a problem. They want you to serve them and be courteous, flexible and of course talented. You have to remember, especially when they’re making you upset, that you can just suck it up and take their money…that’s what there business about…developing clients. Always be nice. They want you to be like a waiter. They ask, you deliver and you don’t snap back…
