Active listening is not something that you can master overnight; it takes practice, patience, and self-awareness. As a business coach, you should prepare yourself mentally and physically before the coaching session: eliminate distractions, set a clear agenda, and relax your body and mind. It's important to focus on the client and what they are saying without interrupting, judging, or jumping to conclusions. Utilize eye contact, nodding, and facial expressions to show that you are listening. Ask open-ended questions to encourage the client to elaborate, clarify, or explore their thoughts and feelings. Reflect back what the client is saying using paraphrasing, summarizing, or mirroring in order to avoid misunderstandings or misinterpretations. Additionally, provide feedback and support to the client using affirmations, validations, or suggestions to show appreciation and respect for their perspective. This will help motivate and empower them.
